Elyse hesitated, her composure cracking for a brief second. She pressed her lips together before speaking. “I’m sorry, Kristine. I’ve spent years abroad receiving treatment, and my phrasing isn’t always as careful as it should be. If I caused any confusion, that truly wasn’t my intention p>
Kristine nodded slightly. “Good. I hope you remember this moment. Since we’re essentially colleagues now, if I ever hear you thanking me again for ‘taking care of Colton’—” She leaned closer, a sharp smile curling across her lips. “I’ll release every message you ever sent me and let everyone decide for themselves who the side chick really is p>
The color drained from Elyse’s face instantly. Still unwilling to let anyone see it, she forced a pleasant smile. “Don’t worry. If anyone ever says something like that about you again, I’ll be the first to correct them p>
Only after that did Kristine straighten her posture and turn her attention back to the room, offering a composed smile to no one in particular.
