Kristine knew perfectly well that Claire would need Colton’s approval before bringing anything more. She wasn’t nervous about waiting. Instead, she sat on the edge of the bed and quietly began mapping out an escape.
The warm soup had restored a thin thread of clarity to her thoughts. Colton was too perceptive to believe she had simply decided to accept her situation — which meant she had to be careful, patient. For now, her priority was getting her strength back. She especially needed to understand why her legs felt so heavy and useless.
Having a plan steadied her. She closed her eyes and drew a slow, deliberate breath.

As Claire disappeared into the kitchen, a heavy unease settled in Colton’s chest.
Kristine had acted this compliant once before — only to use it against him and slip out of the villa. That betrayal had not faded.
