The line went quiet.
Kristine stood at the balcony for a moment longer, the city settling into darkness below her. The room behind her felt very still.
She went back inside. Davin was at his post, straight-backed and alert.
“I’m going to bed,” she said. “You should rest too p>
She moved quickly toward her room — quickly enough that he wouldn’t see anything on her face that she wasn’t ready to explain.
Davin watched her go without a word.
She had almost closed the door behind her when she came back out.
He looked at her, openly puzzled.
Kristine stood in the doorway and studied him for a moment. “I forgot to ask — did you like the dinner p>

He stared at her, visibly caught off guard by the question.
“Since you’re not saying anything, I’ll assume you loved it,” she said, and smiled. “Next time I’ll bring you more Raskor dishes p>
It landed on Davin then, fully, what she had done — she had specifically set aside the best of what she’d found for him. Not as an afterthought. On purpose.
He opened his mouth to respond.
A sound from the front door cut him off — sharp and deliberate in the quiet of the night.
The sound reached Kristine too, and it drained the warmth from her instantly.
She looked at Davin, her eyes tight with anxiety.
Davin was more alert than she could see — his expression gave away nothing, but every nerve in him was live. He turned slowly and fixed his gaze on the door handle.
It was moving.
Someone was on the other side.
He looked back at Kristine and gave a single, firm signal toward the bedroom.
She understood immediately. She held his gaze for one last, worried second, then slipped inside and eased the door shut behind her.
The suite went completely silent.
Kristine pressed her ear to the door and held her breath, straining for any sound at all.
Nothing.
Then a sharp, metallic click cut through the quiet.
Her heart lurched.
The silence that followed was worse than the sound — dense and watchful, the kind that felt like the moment before something breaks.
A soft knock came at her door.

She recognized Davin’s voice and let out the breath she had been holding. She pulled the door open.
The living room was empty. The suite’s front door stood wide open, and the hallway beyond it was completely clear.
“What happened? Who was it?” she whispered.
Davin shook his head. “Go to sleep. I’ve already asked the manager to pull the security footage p>
Kristine knew she wouldn’t be able to sleep. “I’m staying up. Let’s look at it together p>
He studied her for a moment, then didn’t argue.
They sat in the living room in silence until the manager arrived with the recordings.
