After ending the call, she looked up — and froze. Colton was standing in the doorway. The smile she had worn moments ago disappeared instantly.
“So you asked for the electronic invitation just so you could send it to Elyse and upset her?” Colton asked.
Watching the light vanish from Kristine’s face made something twist uncomfortably in his chest. A dull ache settled in hers as well.
She had expected him to confront her eventually — just not this fast. It seemed he truly could not tolerate even the slightest discomfort when it came to the woman he cherished.
“That’s right. If you want Elyse to stay calm and unharmed, then call off the wedding now. Otherwise, if she works herself into the grave, you will be the one grieving,” Kristine responded.
A deep crease formed between Colton’s brows as his fingers pressed against his temple. “Do you have any idea she was rushed into emergency care? She is still recovering. She cannot handle emotional shocks right now p>
For a split second, something flickered across Kristine’s face before she let out a sharp, humorless laugh. “Then end the wedding. That would solve all your worries p>

Kristine looked at him steadily as a slow smile spread across her lips — calm and cutting at the same time. “Of course. I am built to endure anything. You can crush me however you like. Elyse, on the other hand, is fragile porcelain that needs constant protection p>
A shadow passed through Colton’s eyes. “That is not what I meant. I just think p>
“It is late,” Kristine interjected, her gaze darkening. “Is there anything else you came here to say p>
Words failed him.
“If not, you should leave.” Without another glance, she turned away and lay back down.
Every line of her body spoke of distance, cold and unapproachable.
Colton lingered in silence for a moment, then finally walked out.
Inside the quiet room, tears slid silently down Kristine’s face. Even after love had burned out, she still let his words get to her.
Morning light filtered through the window when Kristine finally woke at ten. That day was meant to mark her discharge from the hospital.
Colton never appeared.
“Mr. Yates likely got held up by work and could not come personally,” Claire said as she opened the car door for her.
