The kidnapper’s tone turned deceptively calm. “Your mother hired us to snatch Kristine and promised a reward — but what she offered is nowhere near what those antiques are worth. Why should we take all the risk for pocket change while your family walks away with treasure? We decided we’d rather have the antiques for ourselves. Isn’t that right, Ms. Palmer p>
The color drained from Jemma’s face. “Those antiques belong to Kristine — she won’t give them up to save me. Please, let me go. I’ll give you whatever money you want. Just let me go p>
Her pleas went unanswered. The kidnappers stuffed a rag into her mouth and turned their attention back to Kristine. “Ms. Green, if you want to make it out of here alive, have someone bring the antiques to our location. Now p>
“So Monica really ordered you to kidnap me?” Kristine’s voice was low, but the pain beneath it was unmistakable.
