Elyse looked at Kristine, took in the restraint on her wrist, and decided she could not pose any real threat. Rising from the wheelchair, she stepped toward the bed and halted several paces away. “Say it p>
“Let Colton come see me p>
A quiet laugh slipped from Elyse. “How many times do I need to repeat myself? Colton does not want to see you. You should give up that idea and hurry p>
Her words cut off as a sudden rush of air slammed into her.
Within seconds, fingers closed around her throat, and the pressure stole her breath.

The fragility of Elyse’s throat was terrifyingly apparent, as though a single twist would end everything.
Frozen in place, Brent did not dare move.
“Please, do not do anything reckless,” he said, struggling to steady his voice. “Murder is still a crime p>
“Death is already waiting for me. What do I have left to lose?” Kristine replied coldly. “Bring Colton in p>
Uncertainty crossed Brent’s face as he looked toward Elyse. With visible strain, she slowly shook her head at him.
“All right,” Brent said after a sharp breath. “I’ll bring him here. Just stay calm.” He turned at once and rushed out of the operating room.
Stepping into the corridor, Brent didn’t know what to do.
None of this had ever been disclosed to Colton. It was true that Colton’s name appeared on the signed consent form — but Brent had obtained that signature while Colton was heavily drunk and unaware of what he was signing. After hearing that Elyse had finally found a compatible donor, Colton had signed the papers without checking a single detail.
If Brent went to find Colton now and the truth came out, the consequences would be catastrophic.
Still, doubt lingered. A glance over his shoulder pulled his attention back to the operating room. Without Colton present, there was no way to predict how far Kristine might go with Elyse in her grip.
Panic tightened around him, and he felt cornered with no way out.
At that moment, a tall silhouette emerged from the far end of the corridor and moved forward at an unhurried pace. Under the shifting lights, the man’s features remained unclear at first. Then recognition struck as he drew closer.
The breath left Brent’s lungs, and his heart jumped straight into his throat.
