“How can you be so cold? She’s a living, breathing person!” Frustration crept into Colton’s tone.
Kristine let out a bitter laugh. “Cold? That’s rich, coming from you. If you care so much, why don’t you give her your own kidney p>
“My blood type isn’t compatible with hers p>

Kristine froze for a moment — then began laughing even harder. Tears streamed down her face as the laughter grew louder. “So you’ve already had yourself tested. Of course you have. You’ve always looked out for her, haven’t you p>
No matter how hard she tried, she would never be enough. Not compared to Elyse.
Colton’s frown deepened. “Kristine, Elyse’s life can’t end here. I made a promise p>
“Enough!” Kristine cut him off. “I’ll donate my kidney, but only if you’re willing to give up one of yours first. Can you do that, Colton p>
Colton fell silent.
Kristine’s laughter turned wild. “Didn’t you say she meant the world to you? It’s just a kidney — so what’s stopping you now p>
Sensing Kristine’s distress, the anesthesiologist spoke up quickly. “Mr. Yates p>
Colton stood frozen, staring at Kristine. Even as her laughter echoed through the room, her smile was radiant — almost as if sunlight had fallen across a field of wildflowers. Yet the sorrow lingering at the corners of her eyes made her look fragile, as though she could fall apart at any moment.
“Go ahead,” Colton said, turning his face away. “Do it p>
Without hesitation, the anesthesiologist stepped forward and inserted the needle into Kristine’s arm.
Within seconds, Kristine sank into a deep sleep. Her eyelids fell, and her body went completely still on the table. She looked as delicate as a porcelain doll — as if even a light touch could crack her.
Something tightened in Colton’s chest.
“Get another bed ready for me p>
The anesthesiologist froze. “Mr. Yates p>
“Is there another surgeon here capable of performing a transplant?” Colton’s voice stayed calm. “Call him in p>
The anesthesiologist stared at him, stunned.
“Do it p>
The anesthesiologist stepped out, then returned shortly after with another doctor, who looked completely lost. “Mr. Yates, what do you need from me p>
“In a few minutes, you’re going to operate on me p>

“Kidney removal p>
Just outside the doors, Bobby and Justin had already sensed something was wrong. The moment they heard Colton ordering his own kidney removed, both men went pale.
“Mr. Yates p>
“Don’t waste your breath trying to talk me out of it p>
Kristine was right. If she had to lose a kidney, then so would he. That way, it would be fair.
Bobby and Justin stood there, tense and helpless. Nothing could change Colton’s mind once it was made up — not even his parents could stop him.
“Why are you two still standing out here?” Brent asked as he walked up. Seeing them lingering outside the sealed operating room felt wrong.
