Startled, Victoria turned. The moment she saw Colton, her tone softened as though a switch had been flipped. “Colton, I was only standing up for you. I would never let her drag you into something that could ruin your future p>
Without hesitation, Colton stepped in front of Kristine, his brow furrowing. “What are you talking about p>
“You do not truly want to marry her,” Victoria insisted. “Leave it to me. I will take care of this properly p>
A dangerous edge entered Colton’s expression. “Who told you I am joking about this p>
Shock rippled across both Victoria’s and Luna’s faces.
“You really plan to marry this—” Luna faltered, remembering her last forced apology, then corrected herself. “This woman p>
Colton didn’t even blink. “The invitations have already been sent p>
“Colton p>
“That is enough.” He cut his mother off, his voice cold and unyielding. “Go home, and stay out of my private affairs from now on p>
Still unwilling to give up, Victoria tried again. “Colton, she is all wrong for you p>

Slowly, he turned to look at her. The warning in his eyes was unmistakable. “I will not say it twice p>
Victoria froze, then pressed her lips together. With visible reluctance, she took Luna by the arm and left.
Watching how quickly Victoria retreated left Kristine feeling oddly dissatisfied. Part of her had hoped Victoria might finally push Colton into letting her go. Instead, once again, no one managed to challenge him.
“What is going through your mind?” Colton asked.
“Thinking about how to get as far away from you as possible,” Kristine replied honestly.
The familiar darkness returned to his face as he reached out and closed his hand around hers. “I am not letting you leave me again p>
Once, those words would have shaken her.
Now, they carried no weight at all.
With a slight tilt of her head, Kristine smiled, her eyes curving softly. “Is that so? I doubt Elyse would agree with you p>
A sharp look crossed Colton’s face. “I won’t see Elyse again p>
Tension flashed through Kristine before she lifted her gaze and let a faint smile form. “Do you mean that p>
Trust was not something she handed out easily, especially not when it came to promises made by men.
A single nod from Colton followed.
After a brief pause, Kristine spoke again. “Then answer this for me. If Elyse broke the law, would you report her p>
Confusion creased Colton’s brow. “What law are you claiming she broke p>
“I said if,” Kristine clarified calmly.
“I do not entertain hypothetical questions,” he replied flatly.
A quiet smile curved her lips. Whether he could not answer or simply refused to was unclear.
“Does Elyse even know you and I are getting married?” Kristine asked next.
Irritation flickered across his face as Colton pressed his fingers against his temples, clearly worn down by her persistence. “Can you stop bringing her up p>
With an easy smile, Kristine responded, “All right. Since you already sent the invitations, should the bride receive one too p>
Colton instinctively reached for his phone before freezing. Only then did he remember that Kristine still had him blocked.
“You will need to unblock me first,” he said stiffly. “Otherwise I cannot send you the invitation p>
