“I don’t want to relax! I want to get the hell out of here!” Kristine screamed, unleashing every drop of bottled-up anger.
Colton frowned deeply. “It’s clear you aren’t going to calm down on your own.” He gave a quick signal with his hand.

The nurse lifted the syringe and pressed the needle into Kristine’s arm.
Within seconds, a heavy wave of exhaustion washed over her. Her eyelids grew impossibly heavy, and she drifted into a forced sleep.
Colton stood watching her, yet the worry on his face never eased. He turned to Claire. “Don’t take your eyes off her.” Then he walked out, his footsteps sounding heavy and tired.
Claire watched him go, turned back to the sleeping Kristine, and let out a quiet sigh.
Back in his office, Colton grabbed his phone. The screen was still lit. “Hello,” he muttered, his voice carrying the weight of the world.
Devin was on the other end, visibly surprised. “What is up with you? Actually, let me guess.” He had been on the line when he heard Colton drop the phone and walk away without a word.
Devin knew for a fact that Colton was currently staying in Crestwood, and there was only one thing that could make him this stressed while he was safely at home.
“Kristine? Did you actually kidnap her and bring her back to your place?” Devin asked, stunned by his own realization.
Just a few days ago, Alma had told him that Kristine had completely vanished. She and Asher had searched every corner of Auroria without turning up a single clue. One of Kristine’s bodyguards, Vinson, had resurfaced but had no idea where she was. The other, Davin, had disappeared without a trace.
Since Colton had been in Auroria at the same time, Devin had begun connecting the dots — though he hadn’t wanted to believe Colton would be reckless enough to pull a stunt like this. But Colton’s quiet mumble over the phone was all the confirmation Devin needed.
