Chapter 233:

“You know, during the first few months of pregnancy, it’s best to stay careful and make sure to get checked often,” said Laura.

If Layla hadn’t overheard Laura and Dayna’s conversation, she might have believed Laura was genuinely showing care for the baby she was carrying. Yet after hearing that conversation, Layla knew Laura was just using it as an excuse.

While the car rolled along, Layla looked for any chance to slip away. But Laura never let her out of sight, and with bodyguards inside the car, escape was impossible.

Walking through the hospital entrance beside Laura, Layla felt her face drain of color.

“Are you feeling alright?” Laura asked, a hint of suspicion flickering in her eyes as she noticed Layla’s sudden pallor.

With Layla’s odd demeanor still on her mind, Laura started to wonder if Layla had figured something out. At first, Laura had hesitated, wondering if she should keep Layla’s unborn baby secretly, but if Layla had caught on, she believed she couldn’t let her keep the baby. Losing the baby boy would be unfortunate, but compared to the Morrison family, the baby didn’t matter as much.

Reading the cold calculation in Laura’s eyes, Layla realized her reaction had betrayed her. She forced a laugh, trying to smooth things over. “It’s nothing, just a wave of nausea. My morning sickness has been acting up all week.” Laura’s suspicion faded as she recalled how unwell Layla had been lately.

Soon enough, Layla was taken to the exam room. Bodyguards lined up at the doorway, blocking any route out.

The doctor inside started with the usual checks. Then, without warning, she produced a syringe.

Fear flashed across Layla’s face. “W-What is this p>

Keeping her tone measured, the doctor explained that Layla’s hormone levels were low and that she needed an injection to help support the pregnancy. But Layla didn’t believe a word of it.

Every instinct screamed at her to run, but the guards by the door left her without an escape route.

When the needle came close, Layla’s panic kicked in. She slipped off the bed and knelt at the doctor’s feet.

“Please, let me go!” She thrust a bank card toward the doctor. “There’s five million on this. Set me free, and the money is yours. I know the Morrison family put you up to ending this pregnancy, but there’s a life at stake. Can you, as a doctor, really go through with this p>

The doctor felt torn. She didn’t know the twisted ties between the powerful families. Orders from above had landed her in this room. She was just a doctor, powerless to refuse.

Seeing Layla kneeling there, memories of her medical vows flashed through her mind. She bent down, took Layla’s hand, pulled her to her feet, and slipped the card back into her palm.

“You can leave. There’s a fire escape at the back,” whispered the doctor, her eyes darting toward the door of the examination room.

Gratitude washed over Layla as she heard the doctor’s words, and she thanked her, voice trembling.

“If you don’t hurry, they’ll catch us both,” the doctor urged. Without hesitation, Layla darted through the back door, vanishing into the hallway beyond.

Laura had been waiting outside the examination room. She idly scrolled through her phone at first, but when the minutes dragged by with only silence behind that door, she felt something was off.

Immediately, she ordered her bodyguards to knock. The silence persisted. When they shoved at the door, they realized it was locked from the inside.

A solid kick from the bodyguards splintered the lock. The room was empty—Layla had disappeared, and the doctor was gone as well.

“Mrs. Morrison, this p>

The sight of the empty room left the bodyguards momentarily speechless. Laura’s expression darkened as she stepped inside. She caught sight of a small door in the back and barked, “Why are you standing around? Go and find her p>

The bodyguards snapped to action, hurrying through the small door. Racing down the hospital corridor, Layla headed straight for the nearest exit. Terrified for her baby’s safety, she clung to her belly, desperate to protect it.

She hit the intersection, only to hear pounding footsteps closing in. When she glanced back, the Morrison bodyguards were right behind her. Her breath caught in panic.

With no time to think, Layla broke into a run, plunging straight into the busy street, waving frantically at an oncoming car. The sudden shriek of brakes filled the street as the car jolted to a halt, flinging Amelia toward the front seat. Wyatt reached out in time to keep her steady.

“Did you get hurt?” asked Wyatt, his voice tight with concern.

Upon hearing Amelia assure him she was fine, Wyatt turned his displeased gaze to the driver. “Don’t you know how to drive properly p>

The driver stammered, “S-sorry, Mr. Stewart. Someone jumped right out in front of us p>

Mustering all her courage, Layla had hurled herself into the path of the car. Now, wide-eyed, she froze, heart pounding. Only when she heard a voice she recognized did she lift her head.

Amelia, staring at Layla sitting on the ground, showed a hint of surprise in her eyes. “It’s you p>
