Chapter 267:
The two vacant beds inside caught Amelia’s attention, and Hiram softly explained, “Those spots were filled before, but the dampness on this floor forced families to move their relatives upstairs p>
Amelia’s attention then shifted to the narrow bed beside the window. From where she stood, she could only see the woman’s gray hair and emaciated profile. If not for the disturbing incident involving Katrina’s medicine, finding Nadia like this would have shattered Amelia. Years ago, Nadia had cared for her like family. Now, caught between suspicion and heartbreak, Amelia could only stand there, looking at Nadia with a complex expression.
There were no curtains on the window, indicating neglect, and sunlight streamed directly onto Nadia’s face. She was squinting when someone blocked the light. She opened her eyes wide and saw Amelia. Perhaps due to the prolonged exposure to sunlight, tears began to flow from Nadia’s eyes.
“Nadia, it’s been ages,” said Amelia, and right then, Nadia’s tears started to flow even faster. She made an effort to speak. But words caught in her throat. Only drool slid down her chin, and all that escaped was a muffled, helpless sound.
After a while, Nadia quieted down, though her eyes remained wide in shock.

“I need to ask you something, Nadia. Did my mother die of illness, or was she murdered? Was her medication switched?” Amelia’s voice quivered, even though she was trying so hard to stay calm. Nadia, who had just calmed down, started to cry out in distress again, this time more fiercely than before.
Her cries grew so frantic that Sariah, standing by the doorway, became alarmed. Without thinking twice, Sariah dashed inside, anxious about what had happened to Nadia. Nobody had bothered to visit since Nadia was admitted, but she still couldn’t let anything happen to her under her watch. She soon realized nobody was hurting Nadia—the shouting was Nadia’s own doing. She let out a silent sigh of relief.
Before stepping out again, she turned to Hiram and said, “Make this quick. If anyone catches us, I’ll be in trouble p>
Nadia’s cries didn’t stop, her voice echoing in the room. Amelia was at a loss for what to do when Wyatt suddenly walked over. He went straight to the corner of the bed. Amelia and Hiram shared a look, both startled to see Wyatt digging through the items in the corner, while Nadia’s screams only grew louder.
It dawned on Amelia that she had missed something important. Nadia wasn’t looking at any of them. She kept her gaze fixed on the cluttered corner, calling out desperately. Stacks of Nadia’s belongings filled the space at the foot of her bed.
Seeing Wyatt rummaging through them, Hiram hurried over and joined him. Together, they sifted through Nadia’s belongings but found nothing unusual. Confusion clouded Wyatt’s face. Maybe he had guessed wrong about the situation.
“Wait, stop p>
Just as Hiram was about to put everything back, Amelia rushed over.
