Chapter 281:
Jaxton’s nerve left Marc quietly impressed. No one in all his years in Kretol had ever attempted to get under Wyatt’s skin like this. Wyatt kept his face calm, but Marc understood that the quieter Wyatt appeared, the angrier he actually was.
Wyatt’s protectiveness over Amelia flashed through Marc’s mind, making him say, “Hey, just so you know. Murder is illegal. You can’t p>
“Letting him die would be too merciful p>
Wyatt’s reply came out soft as a whisper, yet a chill crept up Marc’s spine when he heard it. Marc wanted to press the matter, but a faint twitch on Amelia’s face caught his attention as she lay in bed. Wyatt’s cold eyes darted toward Marc after he noticed it, too.
“I’ll go right now,” Marc replied in a low voice, making his exit as fast as possible.
Wyatt stayed by Amelia’s side, his fingers wrapped around her uninjured hand. Earlier, Marc had mentioned that Amelia would regain consciousness within the hour, so Wyatt’s gaze kept flicking to the clock hanging on the wall. Sixty minutes ticked by with no sign of her waking, worry flickering in his eyes. Just as he reached for his phone to call Marc, he noticed Amelia’s fingers move ever so slightly.
Wyatt’s focus snapped to her face in an instant. Amelia blinked open her eyes, confusion swirling in her mind. Gradually, she pieced together the moments leading up to her fainting. Then an attempt to sit up sent a jolt of pain through her wrist.
Wyatt heard her whimper and rushed to her side. He steadied her and explained softly that her wrist had been fractured. He eased her upright, his voice gentle. “Here. Try to drink some water first.” Recalling what Marc had said before leaving, Wyatt lifted a glass of water to Amelia’s lips. Amelia’s thirst made her reach for the glass, but Wyatt pulled it back, just out of reach.
“Let me hold the glass for you. Just sip slowly.” With a steady hand, he settled next to her, tucking her closer with one arm and lifting the glass to her mouth again.
Aside from her throbbing wrist, Amelia sensed that her body was mostly unharmed. Still, at Wyatt’s urging, she complied and opened her mouth to drink. With more than half the water gone, she finally felt the dryness in her throat subside.
“I am sorry, Amelia. I failed to keep you safe,” Wyatt said.

The guilty look in his eyes made Amelia wonder what he meant, her confusion clearing only when Wyatt brought up what had happened at Denny’s place. No part of her could see him as the one to blame. With gentle insistence, Amelia pressed her finger against his lips to stop him from talking. “Wyatt, none of this happened because of you. You don’t owe me an apology p>
If anything, her words only made Wyatt’s guilt grow stronger. He said nothing, choosing instead to wrap his arms around her, still mindful of her injured wrist. His steady warmth brought a sense of comfort to her chest. Without realizing it, Amelia found herself relying on him more and more.
Just then, a series of knocks interrupted their quiet moment. From the doorway, Kurt called out, “Mr. Stewart, dinner’s ready. Do you want me to bring it here p>
Wyatt turned to look at Amelia instead of answering straight away. She didn’t want to stay cooped up in bed any longer, so she suggested eating in the dining room. Seeing that she was in good condition, Wyatt answered Kurt.
Amelia pulled back the covers to get up, but before her feet could touch the floor, she was lifted by Wyatt. As he strode toward the door, she clung to his shirt, a flush of embarrassment warming her cheeks. “I can walk, you know p>
“You hurt your knees. Walking might strain your wounds,” Wyatt said.
The injuries were minor, nothing that would affect her ability to walk, but Wyatt’s stubbornness left her with no choice but to let him carry her.
Kurt lingered near the stairs. As soon as he saw Wyatt carrying Amelia down, he rushed over. “Mrs. Stewart, are you alright? Any pain or discomfort p>
Seeing the concern in Kurt’s eyes, Amelia said with a soft smile, “I’m alright now. I’ll just need a bit of rest, that’s all. Thank you for your concern p>
“That’s good to hear.” Kurt exhaled in relief after hearing that, the memory of Wyatt’s anxious face before leaving flashing through his mind.
“We have news, Mr. Stewart. Jaxton’s whereabouts have been uncovered p>
