Chapter 69:

From across the street, Dayna caught sight of the chaos and jerked her car to the curb, leaving the engine running as she stepped out and sprinted straight for Jaxton. Panic flared in her chest at the sight of him doubled over and pale as chalk. She quickly took his hand and tried to help him up. The moment she applied pressure, Jaxton shoved her away with a pained gasp.

“Don’t touch me p>

Every movement sent fresh waves of pain through his body. Overcome with worry, Dayna could barely stand still. Her eyes glistened, and she paced in frantic circles around him.

Eventually, Jaxton lost his temper. “Can’t you see what’s happening? Call an ambulance already p>

Snapping out of her panic, Dayna finally managed to pull out her phone, fumbling to make the call.

As paramedics lifted Jaxton onto a stretcher and into the ambulance, Dayna jumped behind the wheel of her car to follow, all thoughts of Ricky’s assignment vanishing from her mind. She had been keeping an eye on Amelia, desperate to sniff out the identity of the mysterious man who had taken her to the Pearl Bay Auction House. Despite days of effort, the truth had stayed just out of reach.

Amelia watched the flashing ambulance lights vanish into the distance with Dayna’s car trailing behind. Only then did she quietly draw her curtains.

At Kretol City Hospital, doctors broke the news: Jaxton’s broken ribs required immediate surgery, but they refused to proceed without a relative’s signature on the consent forms, no matter how much Dayna begged.

“Miss, every minute matters. His condition is getting worse the longer we wait p>

At home, Laura waited for updates from Jaxton. Just then, her phone buzzed with Dayna’s call, which she declined without a second thought. After about six persistent attempts, Dayna finally got Laura to answer. Annoyance bubbled up in Laura; she was ready to scold Dayna for being bothersome, but Dayna’s desperate, tear-choked plea cut through the line.

“Mrs. Morrison, please, come quickly to the hospital. Jaxton’s injured p>

“What happened?” Laura asked while urgently calling for her driver.

Deep down, Dayna wanted to expose all of Amelia’s wrongdoings, but Laura ended the call before she could say another word. Left staring at her phone, Dayna seethed, resentment simmering in her chest. Although she and Amelia shared the Flynn name, Amelia’s mother’s wealth made everything different. People looked down on her just because she didn’t come from money.

No matter how much bitterness she held for Laura, Dayna didn’t hesitate to rush forward and greet her politely when she arrived. But Laura, without a second thought, slapped Dayna hard across the face and pushed her aside, heading straight for the doctor.

After a brief, heated exchange, Laura rounded on Dayna, her voice slicing through the hallway. “What were you thinking? Were you trying to get my son killed p>

“Mrs. Morrison, how can you blame me for this? If you want someone to point fingers at, blame Amelia—she’s the reason Jaxton ended up hurt like this!” Dayna said.

She had been worried for Jaxton the entire time, doing everything she could to help him, but not a single word of thanks escaped Laura’s lips—only harsh criticism.

Seeing Dayna’s pitiful expression, Laura only felt her anger grow. “Don’t put on that pitiful face. Jaxton isn’t here, so you don’t have to put on a show. Amelia wouldn’t have problems with him if you’d stop hanging onto Jaxton. Let me be clear—there’s no way I’d let you marry him. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll stay away p>

Laura had always looked down on Dayna. She believed a child born out of wedlock like Dayna had no right to be her daughter-in-law. Never before had she confronted her like this, but with Jaxton absent, she didn’t hold back.

Tears streaming down her cheeks, Dayna left the hospital, unable to endure another second.

Laura fixed her gaze on the glowing red light above the surgery room door before pulling out her phone to dial Amelia.

Echoing the doctor’s warnings, Laura’s voice rose in accusation. “Amelia, Jaxton is your fiancé! How could you do something like that to him? Do you realize he suffered three broken ribs; he nearly p>

“Then do you know he nearly got me killed tonight?” Amelia interjected coldly. “He ran out in front of my car and forced me to brake hard. A car can flip over easily like that. If my car had flipped tonight, I would have been dead. So, breaking three of his ribs was just a small lesson for him p>

Before Laura could get another word in, Amelia ended the call.

Dumbfounded, Laura stared at her phone. The ever-polite Amelia had just hung up on her. She couldn’t comprehend why Amelia had changed so drastically.
