Chapter 258:

Denny was lost in thought until Axton’s calm voice brought him back to reality. With barely a pause, he lifted his chin and reclaimed his air of pride. It was no shock to Denny that Axton could read his mind with such ease.

With a gentle smile, he replied, “I understand what you are saying.” Although Jasiah had said those same words more times than Denny could count, and he himself had reasoned it out many times, logic did little to change what was happening inside his heart.

Once the lecture ended, Amelia nudged Wyatt and guided him to the open field near the Management Department. Just behind the field stretched a quiet hillside and a lake called Joypeak Lake. Back in her university days, Amelia had often spent time in that very spot. She had never expected she would someday wander through these familiar grounds again, this time with her husband.

Stopping at every corner, she painted pictures of her old life for Wyatt, letting her stories fill the air. Through these memories, Wyatt caught glimpses of the younger Amelia, living out her student days. For him, every detail was new and vivid.

By the time Amelia’s voice grew hoarse, Wyatt gently interrupted her and suggested, “Let me grab you a drink.” He thought of the vending machine near the track, remembering it stocked with water. All that talking had left Amelia thirsty, and she knew she needed a break.

Grateful for Wyatt’s suggestion, she offered a nod and said, “Across the bridge, you’ll find a pavilion. I’ll be waiting for you over there. Just come straight to me after.” Wyatt noticed the arched bridge over Joypeak Lake and looked in the direction she pointed. “Got it,” he said with a smile.

As Wyatt moved off toward the vending machine, Amelia wandered onto the bridge.

Memories of her days at Kretol University surfaced as she crossed—especially those afternoons when she had skipped lectures with Carlee and come here for some fun. Thinking of that brought a smile to her face as she headed for the pavilion. But as she neared her destination, Amelia suddenly stopped, her cheerful expression disappearing in an instant.

Bad luck seemed to have found her, and under her breath, she cursed how things had turned out. If she had known Jaxton was here, she wouldn’t have set foot in this place.

Attending the Kretol University anniversary was the last thing Jaxton wanted, but Laura had forced him to do it, believing he could turn the event into an opportunity for networking. Word of the Morrison Group’s collapse had swept through Kretol, reaching every corner. People who had once vied for Jaxton’s attention now greeted him with sneers and thinly veiled ridicule.

Jaxton didn’t want to face those people, nor did he want to go back where Laura would undoubtedly nag him. Restless, he drifted toward the quiet shelter of the pavilion, where memories of time spent with Amelia—sharing meals, flipping through books—kept surfacing.

When he saw Amelia turn to leave, he chased after her without thinking. He cut in front, firmly blocking her way. Since the bridge barely fit two people, Amelia found herself forced to stop with Jaxton blocking her path.

With a cold stare, she shot him a look full of disdain. “Get out of my way!” That sharp glare struck a nerve, stoking a fire in Jaxton. As bitter thoughts swirled—Amelia’s part in the Morrison family’s ruin and his own downfall—resentment filled his eyes.

“Amelia, why are you so cruel? Do you have to destroy me completely?” he exclaimed.

“Is that what you call cruel?” Amelia couldn’t help but laugh, shaking her head at Jaxton’s accusation. “Are you forgetting everything you’ve done? Do you need me to recite your words to the press p>

Out of respect for Santos, she had once spared the Morrisons. But Jaxton had kept pushing his luck. Amelia understood too well—someone like Jaxton would never own up to his mistakes.

Even now, Jaxton shouted back at her, his voice shaking with fury, “I only said a few words. And you sent Wyatt after my family and our company. Amelia, you are ruthless p>

She decided he wasn’t worth another breath. After a pointed, mocking look, Amelia turned away, heading straight for the pavilion.

Amelia’s reaction only further infuriated Jaxton. He watched her walk away, heat rising up his neck, and before he knew it, he lunged and grabbed her. At that moment, nothing filled his mind except a wild urge to see Amelia suffer.
