Her words hit Roger like a slap in the face.
His expression darkened, teeth grinding in anger. “Don’t get too smug now. You haven’t cut your stone yet. It could turn out to be worse p>
After all, finding a real emerald in a raw stone was a long shot. The odds were slim.
Yelena smiled, the corners of her lips turning up just slightly. “We’ll see, won’t we p>
Without another word, she walked confidently to the cutting table.
Indeed, Yelena had every intention of cutting the stone herself.
Everyone around gasped. The girl was young, but she seemed to know exactly what she was doing.
She could even cut the stone herself?
The shop owner raised an eyebrow, a hint of concern crossing his face. “Are you sure about this, young lady? Do you know how to use the machine p>
Yelena flashed him a confident smile. “Don’t worry. I’ve done this plenty of times before.” She was no stranger to the process.
The shop owner, however, wasn’t really worried—at least, not about Yelena. After all, her little stone looked so ordinary, so unassuming.
Compared to Roger’s much more impressive stone, this one seemed like it had nothing to offer. He had already written off the day as a lost cause, his hopes of making a good sale fading fast.

Yelena, however, paid no mind to the whispers and murmurs around her. She held the stone with care, picked up a piece of sandpaper, and began to work. Slowly, methodically, she rubbed the stone against the paper.
At first, nothing happened. The stone’s dull black surface barely lightened, still as unremarkable as ever. Nothing that would impress anyone was showing itself just yet. The onlookers started to lose interest, their sighs filling the air.
Sonya couldn’t hide her impatience. She rolled her eyes, her tone dripping with annoyance. “Yelena, just cut it already. We all know it’s empty. Why are you wasting everyone’s time p>
She was convinced there was nothing hidden inside the stone.
But Yelena didn’t say a word. She was focused, her eyes locked on her task.
The crowd exchanged puzzled glances as they watched her every move. She turned the stone this way and that, taped it up in spots, splashed a bit of water on it, even used a flashlight to peer more closely.
The murmurs grew. What was she looking for?
Finally, Yelena set the stone down on the table and made the first cut. The crowd leaned in, eager to see the results. Nothing.
The people around her weren’t surprised. They had all expected this.
Roger, ever the smug one, couldn’t help himself. He leaned back and grinned, the corner of his mouth curling in superiority. “Oh, really? You’re wasting your energy. That stone’s got nothing—no green, no nothing.” At least his stone had shown some promise.
