It was unmistakably Bella’s voice.
Yelena and Callum’s eyes met in alarm before they dashed toward the kitchen.
“What’s wrong? What happened?” Callum’s voice was tight with concern as they arrived.
Bella, wide-eyed and trembling, cast Callum a fleeting look filled with what seemed like resentment. But the expression vanished almost as quickly as it appeared.
Composing herself, Bella stepped toward Callum, her face now a picture of sweetness. But not before she shot a sharp, wordless warning in Megan’s direction.
Megan caught the signal and, without a word, continued sweeping up shards of glass from the floor.
“Oh, Dad, I’m so sorry,” Bella cooed, her voice as soft as silk. “I dropped a glass by accident. Did I frighten you p>
Callum’s brow creased slightly. “Are you hurt?” he asked.
“No, I’m fine,” Bella replied with an innocent shake of her head. Relieved, Callum let out a sigh. “Be careful next time. A broken glass isn’t worth worrying over, but you hurting yourself would be p>
“I’ll be more careful, I promise,” Bella said, her tone dripping with sugary compliance.
Satisfied, Callum turned to Megan, the housemaid. “Make sure this is cleaned up properly,” he instructed. “Donna’s always in here baking, and the last thing we need is her stepping on glass shards p>
“Yes, sir,” Megan murmured, keeping her head low as she meticulously continued sweeping the remaining shards. Yelena observed the scene with detached interest before turning her gaze away, her expression unreadable.
“You haven’t told your mom you’re back yet, have you?” Callum asked Yelena, breaking the silence. “If you go see her now, she’ll be over the moon p>
Yelena nodded, her lips curling into a faint smile. It was exactly what she planned to do. She could already imagine Donna’s face lighting up with joy, and the thought filled her with quiet anticipation.
