Who were these people? What did they want?
Katelyn squared her shoulders and approached the two men, her tone icy.
“What are you doing here? Who gave you permission to loiter around? Leave immediately, or I’ll call the police p>
“And who are you?” one of the young men, taller with a cocky smirk, turned to face Katelyn. His gaze was sharp, unbothered by her hostility. “We’re here to see Yelena. Is she home? Go fetch her—we need to have a word p>
Katelyn’s eyes widened in shock. She blinked, momentarily caught off guard by how disrespectful they were. These ruffians were quite bold to speak to her in such a rude manner.
Furious, Katelyn planted her hands on her hips, her voice rising. “Yelena? What business could you possibly have with her p>
“Why are you poking around in our business? Look, we’ve got dealings with Yelena. We’re her close friends,” one of the men snapped.
Bella tugged at Katelyn’s sleeve, whispering urgently, “We need to call Yelena. These people won’t back off until they’ve seen her p>
Bernice agreed, her voice low but firm. “Yes, Mom, let’s bring Yelena back. This is her mess; she needs to fix it p>
Katelyn’s mind flashed back to Donna’s words from the night before, and she couldn’t hold back a scoff. So, this was the “good daughter” Donna had raved about? Look at the crowd Yelena was hanging with—neither here nor there.
How had Yelena gotten tangled up with people like this? Maybe it was time Donna saw just what kind of situation her precious daughter had gotten herself into.
With that thought in mind, Katelyn dialed both Donna and Yelena, urging them to come back home quickly. Trouble was brewing, and she needed them both. Donna, out with her friends, dropped everything and rushed home when she got the call.

Yelena, wrapping up her day at work, was already planning to head home. Katelyn’s call, though, made her quicken her pace.
Katelyn had sounded so rattled on the phone, leaving Yelena puzzled about what was really going on. By the time Donna and Yelena arrived together, they found two men at the gate.
They exchanged a glance before walking over.
The moment Katelyn spotted Donna, she started venting. “Donna, you’re here! Thank goodness. You were just saying last night how much you trust Yelena, and how she wouldn’t get into any trouble. But look at the mess she’s created now. These two claim to be her friends, and they’re here to see her p>
Donna’s frown deepened as she processed Katelyn’s words. She eyed the two young men, her frown deepening in disbelief.
“Who are you?” Donna’s voice was sharp with suspicion. “What do you want with Yelena p>
Donna had always trusted her daughter’s judgment, and she couldn’t believe Yelena would befriend dangerous people like this. She knew her daughter’s character well enough to be sure these strangers had no business here.
One of the boys spoke up, trying to sound confident. “I’m Yelena’s boyfriend. Is she here p>
Yelena gave a faint smile, her eyes cold but composed. “Aren’t you supposed to be her boyfriend? Can’t you recognize your own girlfriend? She’s right here,” she said, her finger pointing at Bella.
Bella flinched, startled when Yelena singled her out, but Yelena continued with icy clarity, “You don’t even know who Yelena is, so how can you possibly call yourself her boyfriend p>
The young man’s frustration was evident as his face reddened. “What kind of game are you playing? Do you want trouble p>
“Who sent you here? Speak up, or don’t expect to leave in one piece,” Yelena responded with a voice as sharp as a knife.
