Maggie, equally puzzled, tried to soothe the agitated cat. “Lena,” she called softly, but Lena refused to back down, its fur bristling with defiance.
Left with no other choice, Maggie glanced at Austin for help.
Austin approached, his voice calm but firm. “Lena p>
At the sound of his voice, the cat’s aggression melted away. It leaped into his arms, nuzzling against him with the contentment of a child reassured by a parent.
Austin stroked its head gently and chided, “It’s rude to hiss at people.” Though Lena appeared to relent, it turned its head away petulantly, clearly still displeased but unwilling to escalate the matter further. Monica watched this scene unfold, a bitter taste rising in her throat. To her, Lena’s behavior was as inexplicable as the whims of fate.
Later, after Austin had showered and changed into fresh clothes, he sipped a cup of black coffee. Under Maggie’s insistence, he grudgingly ate a light breakfast before heading off to work.

Monica waved her off with a gentle smile. “Oh, there’s no need to trouble yourself. It’s exhausting for you to tag along. I’ll manage on my own. I just mentioned it so you wouldn’t worry when you can’t find me later p>
Maggie hesitated, torn between her sense of duty and Monica’s firm insistence. In the end, she relented, thinking to herself that Monica seemed considerate and independent.

Meanwhile, Yelena, who had come to the hospital to visit Charli’s mother, spotted Monica in the corridor. Her curiosity piqued, she quietly decided to follow.
Inside the consultation room, Monica spoke with deliberate urgency. “Doctor, I was scratched by a cat yesterday. My friend assured me the cat was vaccinated, but I’m still worried. I’d like to get a rabies shot, just to be safe p>
The doctor offered a reassuring nod. “If the cat has been recently vaccinated, it’s unlikely to pose a risk. However, if you’re feeling concerned, getting the shot as a precaution is a reasonable choice p>

Yelena had no idea what Monica had whispered to the doctor inside the consultation room. All she saw was Monica being wheeled out by a nurse moments later, the test report in the nurse’s hand.
“Miss Mitchell, please wait here for a moment. I’ll go settle the fees for you,” the nurse said kindly.
“Okay,” Monica replied, already fishing her phone out of her handbag to scroll absentmindedly.
Meanwhile, Yelena followed the nurse and, with deliberate clumsiness, bumped into her. The test report slipped from the nurse’s hand and fluttered to the floor.
Yelena quickly crouched down and picked up the fallen report. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to,” she said, her voice soft and apologetic.
