Austin had been trying to keep his new digs under wraps, not quite ready for Yelena to find out. But now, with the secret out in the open, there was no point in playing coy.
Yelena glanced up, her expression neutral, and then gestured toward a small cardboard box on the ground. “Looks like someone’s left these kittens behind p>
Inside the box were two fluffy white kittens, barely a month old, their oversized eyes brimming with curiosity.
One climbed into Yelena’s hands, purring like a tiny motor and nuzzling her fingers as though they’d been lifelong friends.
The second kitten, not to be outdone, tumbled out of the box and padded straight to Austin, settling at his feet.
From a shadowy corner, John observed the scene with bated breath. He remembered vividly that Austin had never been an animal lover. To John’s astonishment, Austin crouched down and scooped up the little furball, holding it awkwardly but tenderly.
Austin initially intended to gently nudge the kitten away from his feet, but the tiny creature had other plans. It nuzzled his hand with surprising trust and let out an irresistibly soft meow.
Austin froze, caught off guard by the warm feeling creeping through him, as though a crack had formed in the icy armor around his heart.

Austin snapped out of his thoughts and glanced down at the fluffy bundle. Oddly enough, he didn’t feel his usual aversion. If anything, the kitten’s presence felt strangely… comforting.
Yelena tilted her head thoughtfully. “So, what do you think? Want to keep them p>
Austin opened his mouth to refuse, but the thought of disappointing Yelena stopped him in his tracks. Instead, he smiled faintly and said, “Sure, I’ll keep them at my place. You can drop by anytime to visit p>
Yelena nodded in agreement and moved to hand the kitten in her arms to Austin. However, as she tried to pass it over, the tiny creature clung tightly to her sleeve with its claws and let out a plaintive meow, clearly unwilling to part from her.
Austin gazed at the tiny kitten curled up in Yelena’s arms and chuckled softly. “Looks like it really likes you p>
After a moment’s pause, he added with a playful grin, “Why don’t you keep them? I can visit whenever I get the chance p>
As Austin finished speaking, he gently extended his arms to hand the kitten he was holding to Yelena.
But just like before, the kitten let out a distressed meow, reluctant to leave Austin’s warmth.
Yelena and Austin exchanged a puzzled look.
John decided it was time to step in. He walked over, cleared his throat, and said, “Well… looks like the cats have already made a decision for you. How about this—each of you takes one p>
Yelena adored the kitten, but… “They’re siblings. Is it really okay to separate them p>
John shrugged, smiling gently. “You won’t know unless you try. Take one each, and if it doesn’t work out, you can always bring them back together p>
