Megan nodded grimly. “I overheard them talking about it. Couldn’t have been clearer.” Her words carried a spark of bitterness, her eyes flashing with barely contained anger.
“It’s so unfair,” Megan grumbled, her voice thick with indignation. “You and Yelena are both their daughters. So what if you’re not their biological child? You’re the one who’s been there for them all these years. How can they treat you like this p>

The Harris family is already paying you a generous salary. Your job is to keep an eye on everyone in this house and report back to me. Nothing else p>
Megan’s response was a mumbled agreement, though Bella had little faith in her sincerity.
“The paycheck hasn’t come through yet, has it?” Megan pressed, her voice softening as she added, “I’m not asking for myself. It’s just… Your dad is p>
“Shut up!” Bella snapped, her voice cutting like a blade. Her glare was venomous as she leaned in closer. “No, actually, go ahead and say it louder. Let the whole house know you’re my biological mother! You know what? They’ll throw me out in a heartbeat, and I’ll be stuck living in that dingy one-bedroom apartment with you and your lot p>
Megan’s face drained of color. She waved her hands frantically. “No, no, I didn’t mean it like that p>
Bella scoffed, her laugh cold and humorless. “Then watch your mouth and remember your place. Things aren’t easy for me right now. When Bella asked for an assistant, Donna had waved it off as a harmless favor and greenlit it without hesitation.
It was such a minor thing that it barely needed Donna’s stamp of approval. To her, Bella even mentioning it had been a courteous formality.
Meanwhile, upstairs, Yelena finally tracked Donna down in her bedroom.
To her astonishment, Donna was indulging in a secret snack, casually nibbling on cookies while a movie played on the projector, the flickering light dancing across her face. The second Donna heard the telltale shuffle at the door, she froze. In a flash, she stuffed the cookies under a blanket.
Seeing Callum and Yelena walk in, Donna breathed a sigh of relief.
Donna caught Callum’s eye, and he felt a pang of sympathy for her.
