Sonya wasn’t naive enough to take that kind of risk. As she watched Tatiana and Sonya walk off, the old woman let out a heavy sigh.
It looked like she’d just have to wait for her caregiver to return.
But this whole experience had left her shaken—she’d never encountered such a glaring absence of kindness before.
After a little while, the caregiver finally returned, holding the water. When she saw the old woman sitting on the ground, her face shifted with surprise, and she rushed over to help her up.
“Mrs. Ellis, are you okay?” the caregiver asked, her voice laced with worry.
“Oh, thank goodness you’re back. I’m perfectly fine, don’t worry. It’s just that I ran into a mother and daughter who were utterly ridiculous. I asked for help nicely, and they actually thought I was trying to scam them. Do I really look like the kind of person who would do something like that?” the old woman said, clearly offended.
She was a woman of class, after all—she didn’t need to stoop to such petty tricks.
“Who in their right mind would think that of you?” the caregiver exclaimed, her eyebrows raised in disbelief. This was Janelle Ellis, for heaven’s sake! Why would she ever need to deceive anyone for financial gain?
“I know, right? It’s just maddening. Maybe it’s because I haven’t been to Eighfast in so long. It feels like everything’s changed.” Janelle sighed, clearly vexed. She had come back for her birthday but didn’t want a big fuss.
Just a simple and quiet meal with family and a few close friends would do for her.
But no sooner had she returned to town than she found herself caught up in this mess, and it was really starting to get under her skin.
“Don’t let it get to you. People like that are a dime a dozen. Not everyone is worth your time or energy,” the caregiver said, trying to calm her employer.
“You’re right, let’s just let it go. Anyway, Roger’s finally back home. I haven’t seen him since I got back two days ago,” Janelle added, a touch of annoyance still in her voice.

She and Tatiana were happily browsing through shops, admiring the beautiful clothes on display, though they both lamented not having the funds to actually buy them. In the end, Sonya picked out two stunning dresses she could afford and left the store feeling quite pleased with herself.
As soon as she stepped through the door at home, her phone rang. It was Roger.
“Sonya, do you have any plans this weekend?” Roger asked, his tone as even as ever, giving away nothing.
“Yes, I’m free this weekend. It’s been a while since you called,” Sonya replied, her voice warm with a touch of sweetness.
“Good to hear. It’s my grandmother’s birthday this weekend, and she’d like to meet you,” Roger said casually.
“What? Your grandmother wants to meet me?” Sonya’s voice faltered with surprise.
Sonya’s excitement bubbled over, her voice rising before she could catch herself.
Realizing she needed to keep her composure, she softened her tone, slipping into a poised and polished demeanor.

Roger chuckled, sensing her mix of nerves and enthusiasm. “No need to worry. Grandma’s been asking about you for ages. She’s coming back in town for her birthday, so this is the perfect chance. She’s as kind as they come—you’ll adore her,” he reassured her, though he couldn’t help but fret that she might be overthinking things.
“Alright, Roger. I’ll do my best.” Sonya nodded, her voice turning shy but resolute.
She felt a flutter of anticipation, much like a bride gearing up to charm her future in-laws. This meeting had been on her mind for what felt like forever.
Sonya knew that Roger’s grandmother, Janelle, was a woman of immense influence within the family, even in her later years.
Once a powerhouse in the business world, Janelle had been the architect of the Ellis family’s towering success. Though she’d handed over the reins to her children long ago, she still kept a watchful eye on the family from behind the curtain.
