The Roberts family had never belonged in a place like this—an event far above their station.
They were far removed from the world of high society, out of their depth.
Yet, here Sonya was, flaunting her presence with Roger by her side.
Yelena’s lips curled into a slight smile as she spoke with icy indifference. “Whose lost dog is this? Barking up a storm in the middle of the day, without even the decency to be on a leash?” She never passed up an opportunity to strike back when provoked.
Sonya’s face flushed with fury, her eyes shooting daggers. “Yelena! How dare you insult me like that p>
“I didn’t say anything about anyone in particular. You’re the one who brought it up. At least you know yourself well enough to recognize it.” Yelena shrugged, her tone sharp and unwavering. “You need to remember your place. Weren’t you the one who left my family behind? What’s your game now, huh? Coming back here, looking for a rich man to latch onto? Maybe you should just leave now before you end up humiliated—because that’s where you’re headed p>
The venom in Sonya’s words was palpable.
This blasted Yelena!
How dare she think she could waltz into this exclusive event and rub elbows with the elite?
The idea was ridiculous, and Sonya couldn’t hold back her disdain.
Roger tugged at Sonya’s arm, his face furrowed in concern as he turned to Yelena. “Yelena, this isn’t necessary. It was me who ended the engagement. I love Sonya, and there’s no reason for you to take your anger out on her. Besides, you’re not even the real daughter of the Roberts family, right? I heard your family is from some backwater place. We’ll never work out. Sonya is just trying to look out for you. But you insulted her, and that’s really out of line p>
Roger spoke with all the righteousness of a man who believed he was in the right. Sonya’s heart swelled with pride at his defense. She squeezed his hand, her voice soft and sweet. “It’s alright, Roger. I understand Yelena’s bitterness. She probably can’t cope with the difference in lifestyle after returning to her roots. That’s why she insulted me. I don’t hold it against her, though. After all, she was used to a life of luxury, but now that she’s back home, who knows if she’s even getting enough to eat p>

Yelena’s frustration was palpable. Sonya’s insincere words made her blood boil, a wave of disgust rising in her chest. “Sonya, you really should take a moment to check your conscience before you speak. And spare me the nonsense next time,” Yelena said coldly, before brushing past them and striding into the Mitchell family estate. Donna was probably already there, waiting for her.
Once inside, Yelena scanned the room, quickly spotting Donna. She made her way over to Donna, her steps confident and graceful. Donna’s face brightened with warmth and admiration the moment she saw her daughter. “Yelena, you’ve arrived! You look absolutely stunning p>
