Chapter 45
Chapter 47
Kaia’s POV
Two weeks later, I couldn’t be more relieved that Kieran had Laura sent out of the pack and as much as I hated to admit, she had managed to get some of the pack members on her side while I still couldn’t get them to see me in a different light.
Kieran’s mom also left for a while, so in a way, things were going back to how they used to be.
And now that Allie was back, she hadn’t stopped apologizing for the whole thing with her mom, but I assured her that it was fine. I was already happy that she didn’t let it come between us.
“He makes me feel like I’m on top of the world!” Allie said, “but I can’t help but feel worried p>
“Why?” Dani asked, “did something happen p>
She shook her head, “I don’t know. He hasn’t really been present.” She sighed, “If
I didn’t know any better, I would think that he’s avoiding me p>
I scoffed, “that’s not possible, he cares about you too much p>
Lylah snorted, “so did you, but you ended up ignoring our mate p>
“Not the point, and we’re fine now p>
“Only because he knows how to handle us. And thanks to me too.” She added but
I just rolled my eyes knowing she wasn’t wrong in a way.
Her relationship with Ryder was going really well and I’m sure he was just busy. Because with each passing day, it was difficult to keep it a secret from Kieran. He could tell something was going on especially when they couldn’t turn off the look in their eyes for one second…it’s a surprise he hadn’t figured that out.
“He’s probably just busy. ” I assured her.
“Thank you, Luna.” She replied, a look that suggested she was still worried was on her face.
I nodded at her. I missed spending time with them since most of what I did the past week was stay in the room, trying to get myself back on my feet and it worked…somehow.
But with Kieran preparing for his meeting with the elders and the pressure of the investigation weighing on him, the only time I got to see him was at night, and most times, I was already fast asleep by the time he got to the room and was also gone by the time I woke up.
The only thing that makes it obvious that he was even in the room when I woke up was his lingering smell.
“You miss the Alpha, don’t you?” Dani asked.
I frowned, “I do, it’s like I haven’t seen him in a long while.” I complained.
“It’s the same for me too,” she said, “but their meeting with the elders is today, and they’ll be fully present from tomorrow p>
“I’m looking forward to it.” I murmured.
“And I’m sure Ryder is just as stressed as the both of them p>
Allie nodded, “I hope so.” She said.
We left the matter of mates and went around the pack hospital checking on those who needed extra care. And that took a long time until I felt my stomach growl, reminding me that apart from breakfast, I haven’t had anything else.
The girls were busy with other patients, “they must be hungry too.” I thought.
I made my way to the pack house, to find something to eat.
The walk didn’t take long, and it was even better that there were only two girls in the kitchen. I recognized one of them as the girl who supported me with her friends. They were cleaning the kitchen and my best guess was that they just finished cleaning up after the rest of the pack members.
“Luna, do you need anything?” She asked, her eyes facing the ground.
“I want to make something, you can carry on with what you were doing p>
She looked at the other girl before turning back to me. “Is there anything you want
in particular? I’m going to make it for you.” She offered.
Offering her a polite smile, I shook my head. “I’ll do it.” I repeated. “What’s your name p>
Both of them looked taken back by the question, but answered me nonetheless.
“Nora.” The one I recognized replied.
“Alexia.” The other one said.
Their eyes followed me as I put together all the ingredients I would need. I decided on a grilled chicken sandwich as it would be faster and my growling stomach needed to be satisfied even faster.
I got to work, humming underneath my breath. This brought back memories, most
of which I have pushed away and even forgotten about.
“I see you’ve finally found your place,” a voice called behind me and I paused.
Ida was standing there, her hand crossed in front of her, a smug look on her face.
I’d completely forgotten about her, even though Kieran mentioned something about her.
Ignoring her, I continued what I was doing. Maybe she’d leave if I didn’t pay attention to her but I couldn’t be more wrong.
She took slow strides towards me, “you should eat well,” she started, “I doubt you’d have an appetite at the end of the day.” A smirk playing at the corner of her lips.
This caught my attention, “what are you talking about?” I asked, signaling for one
of the girls to take over what I was making.
“I don’t know,” she shrugged, “the high chance of us getting a new Alpha p>
“What are you talking about? Kieran is the Alpha p>
“Not for long if he doesn’t heed to the condition of the elders p>
My heart was racing, “was this another way of hers telling me that I didn’t deserve
him, or was she telling the truth?” I thought.
“She’s an attention whore, don’t listen to her.” Lylah said, she was fuming.
“Why are you telling me this?” I asked her, eyeing her suspiciously.
“It’s you that I hate, the Alpha has nothing to do with it. But I can’t watch him suffer for the poor choice in picking a mate p>
The fact that she hated me wasn’t something new to me. But Kieran in the picture was what I was trying to understand.
“You’re dumb too!” She exclaimed, “unbelievable p>
“You think the Elders are going to allow someone who can’t take care of herself to rule this pack? And if you really claim to care about the Alpha…which I doubt, you’ll do the right thing p>
Kieran’s mother’s words came rushing back to me. She’d said the same thing but Kieran assured me that everything was fine.
When I didn’t respond immediately, she scoffed and left the kitchen.
“Luna, the food is ready.” Nora said, calling my attention back to reality.
I doubt I still had an appetite after what Ida said but I collected the food, thanked them before going back to the pack’s hospital.
Ida’s words kept playing over and over again, “do what is right, but what exactly was right?” I asked myself.
“I’ll wait for Kieran, he’ll explain what was wrong.” I concluded, just as the hospital came into view.
