Chapter 48

Kaia’s POV.

Dani and Allie could tell something was off when I got to them but I assured them that it was because I was tired from the cooking, using the fact that it’s been a while as an excuse.

We called it a day and I went straight to the room where I took a shower and got ready for bed. Kieran should be back anytime soon and he would be able to provide answers to the unending questions I had.

Several hours passed, but he still didn’t come and mind-linking him failed. I got tired of waiting and climbed the bed but sleep eluded me like a plague, so I gave up trying and sat upright.

“But if they take his position from him because of me?” The thought was heavy on my mind.

“Like that’ll happen.” Lylah scoffed. “Do you think they’d risk replacing him with a weak Alpha p>

“I know he’s strong, but the elders are unpredictable. Do you think they’re going to consider that if the time eventually comes?” I asked her.

If there was one thing I hated about the Elders from everything I know about them, it’s their rigidness. They followed blindly, rules set for the werewolf community even before most of them were born.

My thoughts were broken when the door opened and Kieran’s familiar smell filled my nostrils.

“Bella,” Kieran called, his voice sounding low and tired, making me frown. “Why are you still awake? It’s late?” He said.

“I was waiting for you, why are you just coming p>

“The meeting dragged on p>

A lot of things crossed my mind, does this mean she was telling the truth?

“Why didn’t you mindlink me? I was worried…that I trailed off, I shouldn’t jump

to that already. He waited for me to continue, but I shook my head, “how was the meeting p>

He shrugged, “nothing serious.” He replied.

My shoulder slumped, a pang of disappointment flash through my eye at the possibility that he was hiding something.

“Are you okay?” He asked, taking a good look at me. I avoided his eyes and using the method he taught me when I complained about him reading my thoughts, I pulled my wall up and he frowned.

“I’m fine, I just missed you.” I told him, going to hug him and his body relaxed. “Since you’ll be around tomorrow, we’ll make up for it p>

His body stiffened and he pulled back from me, his hand held my shoulder and guilt swam around in his eyes.

“What is it?” I asked.

“Tomorrow is the concluding meeting,” he said, “I thought I would be able to finish up today, but some things came up p>

He was looking at me but at the same time it felt like he wasn’t. He was being vague which was unusual because normally he told me everything even the ones that I didn’t understand.

“Oh.” I said.

The possibility that I might be overreacting because of my conversation with Ida did cross my mind and then him not telling me what actually happened didn’t help matters.

“But once that is over, it’ll just be you and I p>

“It’ll definitely be you and I, if you’re no longer Alpha.” I thought.

“Tell me how your day went.” He said softly. He began changing out of his clothes, my eyes watching his movement.

“I’m a bit tired now, maybe tomorrow.” I told him, ignoring Lylah, who lets out a string of curse words.

His face fell, “oh p>

I nodded and climbed into bed. He followed suit, entering the duvet, pulling me closer and the warmth I was familiar with enveloped me.

“I love you, Bella.” He murmured against my skin before placing a kiss on my head. I drifted off to sleep listening to his chest rising and falling.

As usual, I woke up alone, Kieran’s side was cold like he was never here in the first place.

Martha prepared a bath for me, the first time in days since I insisted on doing it myself. My mind felt like a dark cloud clogging it. I sluggishly pulled myself out of bed and took a bath.

“I’m not sure I can go to the hospital today.” I murmured when I met up with the girls.

“Me too,” Dani agreed. “I mean I dislike the Elders, but I’m crossing into a new level of dislike for them p>

Allie looked lost, Ryder’s absence was also taking a toll on her.

Dani suggested taking a walk, to relax but I shook my head, suggesting we went to the training ground. I’ve been there a few times when Kieran agreed to show me how things were done there. They agreed, and we made our way there.

“I know I’m tired and frustrated, but I’m sure that is Laura.” Dani said, causing us

to stop in our tracks. The said person catwalks towards us, her head held up high.

“What is she doing here?” I asked, my voice barely audible.

“Don’t look so surprised to see me.” Laura said when she got to us. “You didn’t think you were going to get rid of me that easily, did you?” She smirked.

I struggled to keep a straight face, “how are you back?” Kieran clearly

commanded that she wasn’t to be seen anywhere in the Pack.

“Try to keep up, Kaia.” She said, raising her hand to touch me but Dani growled at

her and her hand froze midair.

“I’ll take care of you when I’m crowned Luna officially p>

“What’s this bitch saying?” Lylah growled.

“You can stop being delusional Laura, you know that’s never going to happen p>

Allie, who had been quiet until now, said, glaring at Laura.

“Delusional or not, we just have to wait and see.” Without waiting for us to respond, she strolls off like she owns the place.

“Don’t listen to her,” Allie said, her eyes still on Laura’s retreating figure. “I’m sure she’s bluffing p>

I nodded, my mood already ruined. The girls could see that too so when I told them I wanted to go back to the room, they didn’t argue, even though their eyes said something else.

I blocked Lylah out and put my walls up too.

My thoughts rubbed against each other as I got to the room. My mind raced with Laura’s return and the fact that Kieran was hiding something. My heart was pounding like someone was beating a drum. I tried to breathe, but the air felt thick.

Suddenly, it felt like the room was spinning, it felt like the room was closing in on me. I had no control over my body.

“Lylah I called weakly but there was no response

And then everything went black.
