Chapter 96

Kaia’s POV

Maria remained frozen like a deer caught in the headlights, a few of my dresses in her hands and her eyes didn’t leave mine. I stood there, trying to comprehend what was going on, but I couldn’t go past the mess made.

“What happened to my things?” I asked, moving around, trying to pick my things, especially my underwear which were laying everywhere in the room.

“I-I didn’t d-do it.” She stammered, “I was coming in to c-clean up but I met the mess.” She explained.

At this point, I could already feel anger building up inside me. Maria had always been efficient, doing everything that was asked of her, and had never given me a reason to be suspicious of her. But considering the fact that the room was locked and if I needed her to clean up, I would have given her the key or something. After having a long day, the last thing I wanted to deal with was this.

“Maria,” I called calmly, “you want me to believe that you somehow managed to get into my locked room and met it like this?” I continued, crossing my arms in front of me, my eyes taking in the state of the room.

Her brows furrowed, “it was opened. You wanted me to clean the room p>

It was my turn to be confused, “I wanted you to? Did I tell you that after

breakfast?” That was the only time I saw her before now.

I waited for her to continue, to give an explanation for what she meant. I could feel a headache forming, so I softly massaged my temple.

She shook her head, “you sent Ashley to me and she told me you left the door unlocked so I could work. She also said you wouldn’t be back until later…that’s why I was surprised to see you, Luna.” She finished, whispering the last part.

What she was saying probably made sense to her, but it only made her sound like she was making things up. But what exactly could she be looking for in the room? “Who’s Ashley?” I asked, “and if I needed something done in the room, I would have told you myself…just like I do on other occasions p>

“I’m going to ask you one more time,” I began again, my voice losing every element of calmness. “What happened to my room p>

Lylah’s imposing aura filled the room and she fell to her knees, now understanding the gravity of what was going on. “Luna, I swear I didn’t do it.” She cried.

“That’s not going to explain anything p>

A part of me didn’t want to believe that Maria would do something like being a traitor, but with the way information keeps leaving the Pack, anyone could be responsible for it, no matter how much you trusted them.

I got tired of asking her when she kept repeating that she didn’t do it, and that Ashley, who I found out was the girl she’d been arguing with the other day in the hallway, was the one who told her I sent her to clean.

“Where’s Ashley now?” I asked, just as the door swung open.

Kieran wore the same look I had on my face when I first entered. He let out a relieved sigh when his eyes finally landed on me and I was okay.

“What happened p>

I gave him a short recount of what happened and his eyes snapped to Maria, whose eyes had swollen from all the crying she was doing.

“Isn’t Ashley Ida’s sister?” He asked and she nodded her head furiously.

My eyes widened in surprise. Ida had long been sent away from the pack and

since I didn’t really know her, I didn’t know she had a sister.

But just as I wanted to ask what they had been arguing about that day, something

else caught my eyes. A bruise forming on her neck.

“How did you get that?” I asked instead, pointing to her neck and her hand unconsciously reached for it, covering it.

“I was in a fight.” Was her reply, adding that it got out of hand, hence the bruise. And it looked recent even though she said she’d had it for a

few days. Her story was

inconsistent and it was obvious she was hiding something.

Kieran didn’t waste his time questioning her as he mind-linked some warriors to come take her away.

“I’ll confess she begged, trying to fight off the warrior who was now holding her hand.

“Let her go,” Kieran commanded, “I would not hesitate to rip your throat out of your body if you try anything funny p>

She shook her, swearing that she was going to tell the truth this time. But how would be know what the truth was since she only wanted to talk so she wouldn’t be taken to the dungeon.

“Ashley holds a grudge against Luna she started, explaining how she blamed me for being the reason people bullied her as her sister was no longer in the pack to defend her.

She went on to explain that the reason they were arguing was because Ashley wanted to get back at me but she told her that there was no way she wouldn’t end up like her sister but saying that only angered her.

“What was she looking for in the room?” Kieran asked.

“I don’t know, Alpha.” She replied. “I only saw her coming from this direction and assumed she entered the room. I wanted to fix whatever it was but then Luna came in.” He finished.

Kieran had her locked in the room she shared with another girl with a warrior in front of the door. Then he had someone so bring Ashley, but she was nowhere to be found.

“Are you okay?” Kieran asked me when we were finally alone.

I nodded, “I was just shocked, that’s all p>

His eyes searched mine for a few minutes before he wrapped his arms around me, murmuring reassuring words in my ear, his breath warm against my skin.

Even though nothing seemed to have been taken, there was still this uneasiness I couldn’t shake off. It felt like a weight on my chest.

“What are you thinking about?” He asked, when he noticed I wasn’t paying attention to him.

“It might be nothing, but there was a small apart from Maria’s, when I first came in.

It smelled minty and the smell after it is done raining. That’s not Maria p>

“So you think she’s telling the truth p>

“I’m saying that there’s something she isn’t telling us. Except if the smell belongs

to Ashley p>

“I’ll look into it.” He assured me.

Together we picked up everything

that was on the floor. The tiredness I

felt earlier was gone and was

replaced by a sense of dread, that

the room I thought I was safe in,

was easily accessible. What if I had

been in the room? Or even alone like times when Kieran was busy?

The fact that I wouldn’t have been able to protect myself weighed heavily on me.

“Bella Kieran called softly.

“Can we just go to bed already?” I asked, interrupting him.

He didn’t argue as he led me to bed, and for the first time in a while, I felt myself

slip into darkness as I struggled to keep my breathing stable, Kieran’s voice filling

my ears to calm me down.

I hate how helpless I was.
