Chapter 13
Chapter 13
Kaia’s POV
Lylah hasn’t stopped dancing around since Kieran left us to finish getting ready. And this time, I couldn’t blame her. It was just a kiss on the forehead and I haven’t even stopped thinking about it. I couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like when he actually kisses me.
“You don’t have to think, you can just grab him and see for yourself.” Lylah sang, sounding too excited for her own liking.
“And look like a crazy woman? No, thank you.” I said, rolling my eyes as I wrapped my towel around me before stepping out of the bathtub.
“You’re crazy about him, same difference p>
“And you came to that conclusion after a normal conversation? We just talked, that’s all p>
“I would believe you if I wasn’t there myself. King and I could feel the sexual tension p>
I choked on my saliva, “I’m going to block you if you keep this up.” I threatened, but she just rolled her eyes.
“You’re going to have to face it sooner or later p>
I blocked her.
After dressing in a comfortable jean and top, I put my hair in a bun and sat on the couch, waiting for Kieran to be back so he would escort me to meet Dani and Ryder.
After sitting for about ten minutes and he still didn’t come, I went in search of him. He would be in his office and since I’ve been there before, it shouldn’t be that hard to find.
But clearly I was wrong when five minutes later, I was standing at the entrance of a large room, staring at the faces of over fifty people who were laughing and eating without a care in the world. And instead of leaving, I watched them interact with one another, putting their ranks aside.
“Who are you?” A loud voice booms behind me, the voice belonging to a large woman, causing the room to suddenly go quiet and focus their attention on me.
I froze like deer caught in the headlight, “umm…Kaia.” I stammered, my voice barely audible. But with our hearing ability, I knew she heard me and probably did everyone else in the room.
“I’m just looking for Kieran p>
The moment that left my mouth, a collective gasp and whispers went up in the air. “Nice going, Kaia.” I thought, wincing. “I should’ve just sat down in the room p>
I contemplated running away but before I could decide, a girl walked towards me, no trace of smile on her face. She looked older than me but with probably as year or two. And with each step she took, I took one backward but she caught up with
me.
“Who do you think you are, calling the Alpha by his name?” She asked, her voice lacking warmth, while her eyes threw daggers at me.
“It’s…umm.” I stammered.
“Tear the bitch’s face.” Lylah said, pushing herself to the surface.
“You sounded bold a second ago, where did that go p>
“I-I’m p>
As I stood there, feeling embarrassed and self-conscious, Kieran appeared behind me, his presence sudden and reassuring. I didn’t see him approach, but I felt his warmth, as he stood behind me. My body leaned into him.
“Alpha the girl in front of me called, bowing to him. Her voice suddenly became sugary sweet.
He ignored her greeting as his eyes narrowed, his gaze fixed on her and his voice dropped to a low, warning growl. “That’s enough, Ida,” he said, his tone firm and commanding. “You will not speak to my mate in such a manner p>
Ida’s face paled, and she took a step back, her eyes darting nervously to me before returning to Kieran. The room fell silent, with all eyes fixed on Kieran, probably surprised by the announcement.
Without giving them time to get over their shock, he took my hand, leading me away.
“Sorry about her, are you okay?” He asked, once we were at a safe distance from the pack members and the anger in his eyes had subsided.
I nodded, “I was coming to find you, but I must’ve missed a turn.” I murmured, my face turning red from embarrassment.
“It’s okay. And I’m sorry I kept you waiting, something came up and you weren’t in the room when I got there p>
“It’s okay p>
We continued to his office, where Caleb and Ryder were already seated, going through some paperwork. But on seeing me, a wide smile appeared on Ryder’s face as he stretched open his hands.
“Luna!” He exclaimed.
I returned his smile, but didn’t move to hug him as Kieran’s grip on my hand tightened.
“Again, got it.” He murmured, pouting his lips, making me chuckle.
Caleb snorted, looking up from the file he was holding. “Good morning, Luna.” He greeted, bowing his head a little.
I don’t think I would ever get used to that.
“Hi Caleb, how are you?” I asked, waving my free hand politely at him, and I didn’t miss the surprise look that flashed in his eyes.
Kieran had the same smile on his face and I couldn’t help but frown, “am I not supposed to do that?” I whispered to Kieran whose smile grew even wider.
“You’re the Luna, you can do whatever you want to do.” He assured me. “Come on, Dani is waiting for you p>
“Oh and Luna.” Ryder called, “whispering doesn’t work here. Super hearing, remember?” He asked.
“Why do I keep putting myself in this situation?” I thought, trying to hide my face, Ryder’s laughter filling my ears as I left the room.
Kieran led me through the pack house towards wherever Dani was. As we went, I couldn’t help but wonder just how big the pack house was. I suddenly didn’t feel bad about missing a turn because with a house like this, you definitely need a map to find wherever you want to go.
“This is sort of an orphanage home.” Kieran explained. We were standing in front of a large building that had a lot of kids running around.
“It’s for children who lost their parents in rogue attacks or at birth. And Dani takes care of it but you can take over whenever you’re ready p>
As Kieran explained the orphanage, I felt a pang in my chest. Seeing the children laughing and playing, their smiles carefree, brought back memories of my own childhood. I remembered the feeling of being alone, unsure of where I belonged. Kieran’s words faded into the background as I watched the children. I felt a sense of connection, of understanding. These kids had lost so much, just like me. Before I could come up with a response, two kids ran up to us. “Alpha…up.” They screamed. Both girls couldn’t be more than five years old and my heart went out to them.
“Up you go.” Kieran said.
He scooped both of them in his arms at once like they weighed nothing. I watched
with adoration as he interacted with them and their smiles.
“He’s good with them, isn’t he?” Lylah said, catching me by surprise.
“Do you just appear whenever you feel like p>
“Your conversations are boring, they put me to sleep. But it’s progress.” She replied.
“Alpha, is she your mate?” I heard one of the girls ask before I could give Lylah a response.
Kieran’s face brightened as he looked at me, his eyes full of adoration. “Yes. She’s mine p>
I felt a flush rise to my cheeks, but my attention remained on the children. She seemed to accept me without question, their smiles genuine.
“You’re so beautiful, Luna. I like your hair.” The same girl said, stretching her hands towards me.
“Thank you. You are beautiful too.” I told her and she smiled brightly.
The other girl Kieran was holding had a frown on her face and fought to come down. Once she was down, she ran back in the same direction they came from. “She doesn’t like me, does she?” I asked.
“You’ve met Freya and Bailey.” Dani, who was already coming towards us, said. “Bailey wants the Alpha to be her mate, so you have some competition, Luna.” She continued after greeting both Kieran and I.
“I guess I have work to do.” I joked.
“There’s no competition, it’s just you.” Kieran assured me and I nodded.
Then he turned to Dani, “take care of her p>
“Yes, Alpha p>
“I’ll see you soon, okay?” He said, placing a soft kiss on my forehead again. And
he was gone.
“I saw that, how are things with the Alpha?” Dani asked, wriggling her eyebrow suggestively.
“Shut up.” I murmured, balancing Freya in my arms.
“I can see that smile, something happened, didn’t it p>
I didn’t respond, as I went towards the other children.
