Ryder’s POV
I was anxious… scared even. I had just one chance to make Allie change her mind about me and at the same time, I had no doubt it was going to be hard seeing how Dylan’s absence hit her hard and it doesn’t seem like the right time bringing up the conversation.
But one good thing was that she was no longer avoiding anything that had to do with me. That alone, gave me hope.
“I’m not going to mess up this opportunity.” I thought, heading back to my place. I needed to take a shower after being on patrol duty the entire night. I’d probably catch an hour of sleep or two…if not I wouldn’t hear the end of it from Luna Kaia.
I ended up sleeping for more than three hours before going back to the Pack house to discuss the way forward about Nessa and the person she was working for. I’m still in awe at how she managed to trick all of us with her innocent look for this long.
“You know,” I heard Kaia’s familiar voice say, snapping me to the present. “if I had a dollar for everytime I’ve seen you distracted, I’d be rich.” She continued.
I let out a snort, “you’re already rich, what are you talking about p>
She just rolled her eyes. “You know what I’m talking about p>
“I’m not even distracted, I’m thinking about our strategy…there’s a difference.” I explained. “Are you going to the child care? I’ll see you off.” I volunteered and I saw her brows raised questionably. “Only because Edward isn’t here p>
“Sureee she drawled. “Allie isn’t there just so you know p>
I stopped in my track. “Where’s she…I mean she should be with you, not anywhere else…you’re pregnant and you shouldn’t be alone p>
She snorted, “Even my unborn pup wouldn’t buy that.” She told me, and I raised my hand to scratch the back of my neck. She was right, but it was the only way I could I see her without making it look like I was pushing her when she wasn’t ready.
“Just go look for her p>
“I can’t, she would reach out to me when she’s ready p>
She nodded. “That’s smart.” She said. “But she’s preparing for the meeting, sorting out dresses and other things. It’s something she’s doing to take her mind off everything p>
I frowned, “she’s going for the meeting? I thought Dani was going since she’s Caleb’s mate p>
Since for some reason, Kieran agreed for each Alphas’ to come along with their Beta, it was only normal that Caleb goes along, but Allie going instead of Dani is what I didn’t understand.
Kaia shrugged, “you should talk to Kieran p>
“I’ll see you later, Luna.” I told her, already moving backwards.
“We’re nowhere near the child care yet, you were supposed to see me off.” She teased, but I murmured an apology before running in the opposite direction towards Kieran’s office.
But instead of Kieran, Caleb sat there, fully engrossed in whatever he was looking at. “Do you know that witches just like wolves become more powerful the moment they get their familiar?” He asked me, not looking up from the document.
“Hmmm I hummed. “Where’s Alpha Kieran p>
He finally looked at me, “he’s paying Alpha Tyler a visit.” He replied. “What’s up p>
I paused, not wanting to sound too obvious. “you’re going to Alphas’ meeting with Dani right?” I asked him, trying to sound dismissive.
“Dani thinks it’s going to be boring…not a lie, so she isn’t interested. Allie’s going though p>
“Oh,” I said, “I thought you were going together…it’d be more fun that way p>
He didn’t respond immediately as he thought about it. Deep inside of me, I was praying to the moon goddess that he buys it and choose not to go either.
“Just tell him why, it’s not that hard.” Kaid said, fed up with all the beating around I was doing.

My jaw dropped, literally. I couldn’t even come up with anything to cover up to say I was doing it for his own benefits not mine. “What are you talking about?” I asked, playing it casually.
He scoffed, “you don’t have to worry though, I’ll pretend I don’t know anything and you can go in my place…only if it’d fix your stinky attitude.” He finished.
“I don’t have a stinky…thank you.” I told him, instead of asking all the questions I had in my head at the moment.
“I mean, Alpha Kieran would have your head when he finds out, but do sort whatever happened between the two of you.” He said and I nodded. I was planning on it.
The soft voice in my head asking me if I was busy and could talk now stopped me from asking him how he knew since Dani promised not to mention it to him…but again, they were mates.

I told Allie, rushing out of the office while murmuring what sounded like an excuse to Caleb, who didn’t bother to respond…and if he did, I didn’t hear him.
I got to Allie’s room in record time, but as I stood in front of her door, felt my chest tightened at the possibility of things not going in my favor and then having to fulfill the promise of leaving her alone.
“That cannot happen.” Kaid growled.
“I’m not going to survive if it does.” I told him as I finally summoned the courage to
knock on the door which flew open almost immediately.
My eyes landed on Allie, who had her brows raised at me. “I could smell you the moment you stood in front of my door.” She deadpanned, and a shy smile appeared on my face.
“I’m sorry.” I murmured but she just shrugged and opened the door widely to let me in.
I couldn’t remember the last time I

me thrown out of the room faster

After taking her seat on the bed while I stood there, we stared at each other without saying anything.
“You said you wanted to explain.” She said, breaking the silence and I nodded, moving closer but the shaking of her head stopped me from moving any closer.
“I found my mate.” I started, my voice low and the frown on her face told me I should’ve picked a better place to start.

“I don’t know if I can trust you again, Ryder.” Her voice was barely above a

“But I did.” She said, her voice breaking. “I gave you several chances to tell me what was wrong. I was willing to overlook every other thing if you’d explain this to me before ending things like that p>
Even though she hadn’t said anything yet, I could tell I was losing her.

The tears welled up in her eyes felt like a stab…I promised never to make her cry.
