After enjoying a hearty meal, everyone was content.
“I’ll give you a ride,” Yelena offered to Tessa.
Tessa quickly declined. “No, thanks. You’d have to go out of your way, and it would cost too much for a taxi. I’ll just catch the bus. There’s a late-night one still running p>
Yelena nodded. “Alright then p>
Unbeknownst to Tessa, Yelena was trying to keep her true identity secret, often misleading her about taking taxis to and from work.
As Yelena was about to leave, she noticed someone discreetly following Tessa. Her expression hardened, and she quickly caught up, sitting next to Tessa on the bus.
Tessa was surprised. “Huh, weren’t you taking a taxi p>
“I felt like taking the bus today,” Yelena replied casually.
“Huh?” Tessa froze, but her face soon lit up with excitement. “That’s great! You finally see how convenient and economical buses are. I’ve been meaning to convince you p>
“You’re right,” Yelena admitted, playing along. “I haven’t received my latest paycheck yet, so I’m a bit short on cash p>
Tessa, ever generous, immediately reached into her pocket and offered Yelena some money. “I have some spare change. You can use it for now.” Touched by Tessa’s kindness, Yelena appreciated the gesture.

Tessa, respecting Yelena’s refusal, reluctantly put her money away. However, she looked earnestly at Yelena and said, “If you ever really need money, don’t hesitate to ask me, okay?” Yelena nodded. “Got it p>
“I’ve reached my stop.” After bidding Yelena farewell, Tessa disembarked from the bus.
Yelena smiled and waved goodbye to Tessa. She then noticed that the person who had followed Tessa earlier was tailing her again.
Yelena’s expression hardened as she discreetly followed them through the crowd.
Curiously, the man watched Tessa enter an apartment building and lingered outside, looking up at the window where the lights in Tessa’s room flickered on. He stood there, seemingly lost in thought, showing no signs of further intrusion. Yelena moved quickly to block the man’s path.
Startled by her sudden appearance, the man instinctively tried to flee, but Yelena was quicker. She reached out, grabbed his backpack, and pulled him to the ground.
The man fell hard.
“Who are you? Why are you following Tessa?” Yelena asked.
The man clamped his mouth shut, refusing to answer.
Yelena’s eyebrows arched threateningly. “Speak up, or I’m calling the police p>
“No, please don’t call the police.” The man finally spoke, his voice raspy as if strained by emotion.
Yelena frowned; something about the man’s voice struck her as unusual. However, his health wasn’t her primary concern. She was more worried about his intentions toward Tessa and whether he posed a threat to her.
