She’d return home then, hoping things would settle.
But now everything had fallen apart much sooner than she’d expected. And it was all Yelena’s fault.
Ellen had wanted to march right up to Yelena and confront her the moment she got back. But Maggie’s timely interruption had dulled her resolve.
With a snort, Ellen turned her attention to Yelena.
“I couldn’t even get a moment of peace at school, so I came back,” she spat.
Her glare was venomous, her teeth clenched as if she could tear Yelena apart right then and there.
“Why are you squandering my brother’s hard-earned money?” Ellen’s voice was sharp with anger. “You hiked up the price of something worth twenty bucks, turning it into over thirty million! Are you out of your mind? Even if we had endless riches, that’s not how we spend it p>
Maggie’s brow furrowed slightly. Ellen was usually the picture of politeness, so this outburst caught her by surprise. Something must have pushed her to the edge this time.

“Ellen, come here,” Maggie said gently, giving her daughter a pointed look.
Before Austin could lose his temper, Maggie wanted to pull Ellen aside.
She didn’t want her daughter to get caught in the middle of the storm. But Ellen seemed determined to step straight into the line of fire.
“Mom,” Ellen snapped, “don’t pull me aside to lecture me. You’ve always taught me to avoid waste, even if we’re not lacking. But Yelena—she buys anything and everything—wooden trinkets, random medicine—she burns through tens of millions of my brother’s money in a heartbeat! Who spends money like that? Even if we had an ocean of gold, she’d still find a way to drown in it p>
Yelena met her gaze calmly, her expression unreadable. “You weren’t even there yesterday. How could you know how I spent your brother’s money? Someone must have told you, right?” she asked, her voice neutral.
Yelena already had a good guess as to who the whistleblower likely was.

“Enough!” Austin’s voice cut through the tension like a knife. “Ellen, we sent you to school to learn—so you could tell right from wrong. Even if you aren’t contributing to society, you shouldn’t let yourself be so easily manipulated. Look at what you just said and did p>
Ellen froze, her anger suddenly fizzling out, replaced by uncertainty.
She stared at Austin, unsure of how to respond.
“I…” she began, but the words didn’t come.
“Come with me.” Maggie’s voice softened as her hand gently pulled Ellen aside.
“Don’t believe everything you hear from the others. You have no idea how dangerous things were yesterday p>
Maggie quickly explained what had happened the day before, carefully omitting the fact that Yelena was Yancy.
Since Yelena hadn’t wanted to reveal that truth, Maggie decided to let her speak up when she was ready.
Ellen had no clue that Yelena had helped identify the pills Aitana needed or that she had been the one to perfect the medicine for her.
She thought Yelena had just been there for moral support. But the fact that Yelena had been willing to put herself at risk for Aitana revealed a different side of her.
