“No!” Johan barked, cutting off the message before his mother could react. In a fit of frustration, he slammed the end button.
Staring at the caller ID with a look of utter fury, Johan was seething. It was as though, with nothing but sheer willpower, he had tracked down the scammer and dismantled them piece by piece in his mind. Nicola could only stare at him in silence. Her son’s obsession was becoming more and more apparent.
The phone rang once more, pulling them both from their thoughts. This time, the caller ID made it clear—it was Maggie.
With a knowing glance at Johan, Nicola gestured for him to remain silent before answering. Maggie’s voice was warm and apologetic through the speaker. “I’m so sorry, Nicola. My daughter can be rather stubborn. She doesn’t like this old-fashioned method of meeting. I apologize again p>
Johan’s shoulders slumped at the sound of Maggie’s voice.
