Just then, Carly Barton said sarcastically, “What a convenient excuse!” Carly, Aitana’s eldest, had settled into family life early. Her own children were already adults. She and Leanna, her niece, had been out shopping when they learned Austin was introducing his fiancée to the family. They rushed over to meet her.
While the Palmer family didn’t match the Barton family in influence, they held a respectable standing in Kheley, and Leanna was considered a well-mannered girl. Carly had long hoped to see Austin and Leanna together, yet Austin showed little interest despite their longstanding acquaintance. Initially, Carly wasn’t even fond of Monica, but now she seemed preferable compared to Yelena.
“I’ve brought my fiancée home to introduce her to the family. If you’re not here to support, you might as well leave,” Austin said coldly.

Yelena, however, was another matter. She was a newcomer, merely engaged to Austin and not yet a recognized member of the Barton family. Their engagement had been conducted in Eighfast, away from the Barton family’s direct oversight. Moreover, Carly pondered, in modern times, even married couples sometimes parted ways.
“Do you talk to your elders like that?” Carly retorted, clearly upset.
Maggie didn’t hold back and said, “Only those who treat their juniors well deserve their respect. If someone acts high and mighty just because of their seniority, constantly finding fault without showing any respect to others, they don’t deserve their respect either p>
“Maggie!” Carly’s glare intensified. “I am your husband’s sister! Don’t you forget about that p>
“And your point is?” Maggie snapped back.

“Let’s please avoid quarrels,” Leonel tried to calm the escalating tension.
“Humph!” Carly huffed in disdain.
“Enough!” Aitana clasped Yelena’s hand warmly. “Austin brought his fiancée to meet me today. If that bothers you, feel free to leave,” she said, smiling encouragingly at Yelena.
Aitana’s fondness for Yelena grew with each passing moment. When Aitana commanded attention, the room fell silent, and everyone was too intimidated to speak. “Please, have a seat,” Aitana said.
The dining table was arrayed with an assortment of delicacies. The atmosphere remained tense following the earlier confrontation, leaving many with diminished appetites.
Most eyes were trained on Yelena, who, undisturbed by the scrutiny, gracefully served herself some food.
Out of nowhere, something landed on Yelena’s plate.
Yelena saw a piece of beef on her plate and, as she glanced up, she caught Austin’s eyes twinkling with amusement.
With a tender look, Austin teased, “Why that stare? Didn’t you mention you were hungry? Go on, eat p>
Yelena offered a shy smile and murmured softly, “Thank you p>
Under the table, Austin gently squeezed her hand, murmuring back, “Anytime p>
Yelena hesitated briefly but soon regained her composure, continuing her meal with feigned indifference.
