Moments later, Weston stepped into Michelle’s ward, flanked by his sons, Shepard and Weldon. The instant he crossed the threshold, Weston knelt before Michelle’s bed, saying with guilt, “Mrs. Davis, I’m so sorry. I was the one who caused Katrina’s death p>

Michelle’s eyes turned moist at that.

She gave him no reply but looked to Weldon, saying, “Help your father p>

But Weldon, hurt himself, could only glance toward his elder brother. Shepard got his signal and went to help Weston up. However, no matter how hard he tried, Weston refused to rise.

Witnessing this, Michelle said, “Katrina’s passing wasn’t yours to bear. I won’t blame you for it. You need only lament the fate that kept you apart. Westy, please stand p>

Hearing her utter the nickname, Weston felt tears form in his eyes. Only two people on earth had ever addressed him as Westy — Katrina and Michelle. Even his parents hadn’t addressed him like that before.

When Weston straightened, Michelle shifted to Amelia and the others, saying, “I wish to speak to him alone for a time p>

With only she and Weston left in the room, Michelle spoke in a low voice. “You’re a smart man; I suppose you already know what I’m going to say p>

“Mrs. Davis, Amelia is the child of Katrina and me. Even if you don’t say anything, I’ll protect her. I was ignorant of her identity before, which led to her suffering. But from now on, I will never allow hardship to touch her again!” Weston met Michelle’s stare with unwavering resolve. “The Stewart family holds a lot of power in Kretol; my family matches it. Michelle exhaled heavily. Though her mind knew Katrina’s end was not Weston’s deliberate fault, her heart still held resentment toward him, for her only daughter had succumbed to despair because of him.

Amelia was the only reason she could speak so calmly to Weston now.

Michelle realized she could not shield Amelia, but Weston had the power to do so. The Chadwick family stood among the highest in Hans. With such force behind Amelia, Michelle no longer had to worry about Amelia being mistreated.

“Wyatt’s heart is genuine toward Amelia, yet feelings might change, and life is long. No one can promise his devotion will never fade. Now, with your assurance, I can rest easy,” she said.

Amelia remained unaware of what Weston and Michelle had talked about in their private conversation, but she sensed plainly that Michelle appeared far more relaxed afterward.

In the evening, Wyatt was discharged from the hospital and returned to Hillside Villa with Amelia. Shepard and Weston went with them, leaving Weldon behind in the hospital.

When they arrived at Hillside Villa, Wyatt directed the staff to prepare the guest rooms for Shepard and Weston.

Soon after Shepard retired to his room, he forwarded a message to Amelia, saying he needed to see her.

Slightly puzzled, Amelia approached Shepard’s door and knocked. Hearing his voice telling her to come in from within, she entered.

The guest room held a small sitting space, and Shepard occupied the sofa. Amelia smiled and sat down.

“Shepard, why do you want to see me p>

Shepard didn’t answer her question but pushed a stack of documents toward her.

“What are these?” Amelia asked.

“Take a look at them p>

Amelia complied. At the sight of the very first document, her eyes flew wide in astonishment.
