Amelia tried to push herself up, but the motion sent a stabbing pain through her skull. Her strength gave out, and she fell back onto the mattress.

With a cold sneer, Laura grabbed her phone and dialed a number. Within moments, the door flew open, and a group of men strode inside.

“By the time this night is over, you will become the laughingstock in Kretol. I’ll see to it that you suffer every step you take, Amelia,” Laura said.

“W-What do you plan to do to me?” Amelia asked.

The sting of the blow throbbed on Amelia’s skin, but she forced herself to meet Laura’s gaze, bewilderment clouding her expression. “What are you talking about p>

“Don’t play dumb! Jaxton is gone, Amelia. And it’s your fault he’s dead!” Laura’s bloodshot eyes locked onto Amelia, wild with fury, looking as though she might tear her apart on the spot.

“No, that can’t be true!” Amelia said, shaking her head.

Without another word, Laura pulled out her phone and showed the screen to Amelia. On the screen, a photo of a brutal car wreck appeared.

The mangled scene showed a man sprawled in a pool of blood, his body motionless. Though the crimson stains blurred his features, Amelia recognized him at once — it was Jaxton.

“You stole my only son from me, Amelia. I’ll see to it that you endure something worse than death itself!” Laura exclaimed.

“Jaxton’s death has nothing to do with me!” Amelia said.
