The moment Shepard and Weston heard Amelia had been kidnapped, they had hurried straight to Kretol. Their attention had clung to her alone, leaving Weldon overlooked. It was only when Amelia mentioned it that they learned Weldon was also injured — and quite seriously.

At first, Colden’s attack had left nothing more than a small fracture in Weldon’s leg. But later, Kylo’s guards had cornered Nora, and Weldon had stepped in to shield her. That moment of bravery had turned a simple wound into something far graver, forcing him into surgery.

“Dad, we should go check on Weldon,” Shepard urged.

“I’ll come along,” Amelia said gently.

Wyatt lay stretched out on the hospital bed, and the moment he heard Amelia’s words, he shifted as though to rise and join them.

Though Shepard’s voice held a calm edge, a thread of disapproval ran beneath it. There was also some blame in his tone. Shepard knew deep down that Amelia’s kidnapping wasn’t Wyatt’s fault, but he still blamed Wyatt partly for it. In his mind, it might have been avoided if Wyatt had protected her well. The matter was, in Shepard’s eyes, a failure on Wyatt’s part as Amelia’s husband.

The words stung, and Wyatt felt frustration claw at him, though he bit it back and stayed silent.

Once, Wyatt had treated Shepard with nothing but coldness. Yet Amelia’s softened demeanor toward Shepard had forced him to tread more carefully around him. After all, Shepard was Amelia’s family, and Wyatt believed he couldn’t cross him.

Not only that, he knew he also had to earn his approval.

Weldon’s ward happened to be on the same floor as Wyatt’s. When Amelia and the others arrived at his door, she raised her hand to knock, but Shepard brushed past her and pushed the door open without hesitation.

Weldon was lying in bed, and Nora had collapsed over him in a position that looked far too intimate. The sound of the door made them both turn their heads in startled unison.

“Dad, Shepard, what brings you here?” Weldon blurted out, eyes wide with surprise.

“What is going on here?” Shepard and Weston asked, ignoring Weldon. Their attention snapped to Nora.

When Nora realized who they were, blood rushed to her cheeks, staining them red with embarrassment. She tried to rise in a hurry, but the sudden pull at her scalp forced her to stop short, beads of nervous sweat breaking across her forehead.
