Kyson’s car idled at the end of the road in the crisp morning air. Once breakfast was finished, Kailey hauled her suitcase outside, and the driver came around promptly to take it from her hands.

Distance blurred the man’s face, but his tall, commanding silhouette was impossible to miss.
Amused curiosity brightened Shirley’s expression as she narrowed her eyes with a quiet chuckle. “So that’s why she was in such a hurry to leave. She’s seeing someone p>
A silent look passed between Sawyer and Aleena. They exchanged a brief glance and chose to say nothing.
Completely unaware she had already been spotted, Kailey settled into the back seat and watched the familiar streets drift past the window in a soft, muted blur.
Leaving this city might only be temporary, and her bond with the Owens would likely remain unchanged. But she knew she was leaving Ryan’s world behind for good.

A brief pause, then his reply came back sharp and unyielding. “I saw it with my own eyes. How do you plan to explain that p>
Any urge to defend herself quietly drained away. She was too tired to argue.
“Then let her call the police,” she said flatly.

“I didn’t push her,” Kailey cut in, her tone calm and unhurried. “Whatever really happened, I trust the police to sort it out fairly p>
With every last expectation gone, an unexpected lightness settled in her chest—not sorrow, but a strange, liberating ease.
“I’ll hang up now,” she continued. “Once she files the report, have the police contact me. I’ll cooperate fully p>
The sharp click of the call ending echoed through the receiver. Ryan sat gripping his phone, frustration simmering beneath the surface.
“Ryan…” Olivia’s voice wavered, thin and uncertain. “What happened? Did Kailey upset you again p>
He set the phone aside and returned to the edge of her bed, his expression hardening. “I spoiled her far too much when she was young. This time, I’ll make sure she understands she was wrong and offers a proper apology p>
Deep down, he knew Kailey’s stubborn streak all too well. She always wore a gentle, obedient mask, yet any slight against her was quietly and methodically repaid behind the scenes. When she was little, those small acts of defiance had seemed harmless, even amusing.
