“No.” In a relaxed motion, Kyson lifted a forkful of cake and brought it to her lips.
Still staring toward the staircase, Kailey opened her mouth without thinking and heard him continue, “If living here feels easier than being at home, she’ll think about what you said and eventually go back to school p>

“I wouldn’t say it if it weren’t true p>
Kailey nodded in agreement. “That does make sense. If she doesn’t want to go home, then she has to listen to me p>
Only after saying it did she notice something odd — he had been feeding her cake one bite at a time this whole while.

The brief warmth against her lips sent more heat rushing to her cheeks.
Trying to ease the awkwardness, Kailey said, “I thought you’d be gone for at least a week. I didn’t expect you back this soon. How did the trip go p>
A subtle shift passed through Kyson’s eyes as he leaned back slightly. “It was just signing a contract. Once that was done, I came back.” His collar hung a little loose, revealing a clean line of collarbone. “I left the rest to Bruno. There was no reason to stay longer p>
Kailey nodded, understanding enough not to press further.
With cake still left, she briefly considered offering him another piece — but a glance at the half-eaten box made her hesitate. In the end, she carried the leftovers to the refrigerator.
