Curled on the couch, Kailey had already drifted into sleep, clearly worn down by the day’s whirlwind. A soft flush tinted her cheeks, and her smooth skin looked almost luminous beneath the gentle light.
Lowering himself into a crouch before her, he studied her peaceful features without speaking, letting the quiet stretch. Oddly enough, even after all these years of knowing her, a subtle thrill still stirred inside him whenever he looked at her, as though every nerve suddenly woke and hummed with life.
His lips lifted into a soft smile as his fingertips grazed her cheek with quiet affection. As of this moment, people would come to know him as Kailey’s husband. Tenderness softened his eyes at the thought. After lingering a moment, he gently scooped her up and laid her beneath the blanket.
Across the broad mattress, Kailey’s slim figure took up only a tiny corner.
A quiet breath slipped from Kyson before he turned and walked toward the bathroom. Nearly half an hour passed before he came out, fresh from his shower. Running a towel through his damp hair, he slipped beneath the blanket on the empty side of the bed.
Sensing his presence even in sleep, Kailey shifted unconsciously and rolled closer. One hand drifted forward, her leg lifting slightly, until she had wrapped herself around him like a plush pillow, nestling into a comfortable hollow and sinking deeper into dreams.
Kyson’s hand lingered midair, his eyelid giving a small, startled twitch. Only then did he realize how much she moved in her sleep.
Within his arms, her breathing gradually evened out. Though he found it amusing, a soft warmth bloomed in his chest — tender and quietly intoxicating. With care, his palm slid beneath the curve of her neck, drawing her gently closer until their warmth mingled and sleep claimed them both.
Kailey had several dreams that night. The last one was about Kyson.
