Kailey stopped at the entrance for a brief moment. Then she turned toward a nearby trash can and dropped the box inside without the slightest pause.

A faint, bitter smile touched her lips. Fantasy Fusion. It had always been about selling beautiful illusions. It was time for her to wake up.
The car followed the same road it had taken that morning. Outside the window, familiar streets slipped past like shadows. She had lived in Aslesall for only half a year, yet she had already faced a marriage that fell apart and ended in divorce.
She steadied herself and shut her eyes.
When the car pulled into Mountain View Residence, Max came running toward it, barking with excitement. The moment Kailey stepped out, he jumped up and pressed his paws against her.
On any other day, she would have laughed and crouched down to hug him.
Not today.
She gently lowered his paws with one hand. “Max, go play somewhere else p>

Kailey stopped and looked down at him. Now that she was divorced, what about Max? He had been raised by Kyson — by all rights, he belonged to him.
She crouched and stroked his head slowly. “Your dad wants to divorce me. Are you staying with him, or are you coming with me p>

Kailey frowned at him. What was that supposed to mean? She couldn’t tell what he was trying to say.
A quiet laugh slipped out of her. She felt ridiculous for expecting a clear answer from a dog. “Max…” A soft sigh followed, but the rest of her words stayed unspoken.
After spending some time with him, she walked back inside. Her gaze moved slowly across the living room she had grown used to. A hollow feeling settled in her chest, mixed with something uncertain and hard to name.
Until today, she had believed this life was only temporary — that once Kyson settled everything and the truth came out, she would leave and return to her own home. Now that belief had crumbled. She no longer had a place to return to, and she had no idea what direction her future would take.
The unease pressed in on her. She sank onto the couch and covered her eyes with one hand.
Kyson received the signed divorce agreement.
