Kailey didn’t want the situation to spiral. When Kyson reached out his hand toward her, she stepped forward and placed hers in his. “If I’d known you two were acquainted, I would’ve asked you to handle the airport pickup.” She still couldn’t piece together how they knew each other — and it sounded like even Quentin might not be aware.
Kyson’s brows tightened when he felt how cool her hand was. He covered it with both of his and rubbed it gently to warm her fingers. “We ran into each other overseas. It was random. I’ll explain it to you later p>
It had happened in a bar. Benny had gotten into trouble over a girl, and Kyson had stepped in to deal with it. After that, the kid had stuck close to him.
Kailey didn’t press for details. She could fill in the blanks herself, and honestly, she wasn’t that curious.
She had assumed Kyson would scare Benny into behaving the way he had with Dagmar. That clearly wasn’t going to be necessary.
Lunch wrapped up quickly. Kailey stood to head back to the office, and Benny automatically followed her toward the car. He didn’t get far. Kyson grabbed the back of his collar and pulled him back. “Where do you think you’re going p>
Benny’s expression collapsed at once. “I’m bored out of my mind. I was only going to wait for Kailey to get off work. I won’t cause trouble. I’ll sit in the lobby and won’t move. I promise p>
Kyson didn’t respond to any of that. He grabbed him by the arm, steered him straight to his own car, and pushed him inside. “You’re staying with me p>
Kailey watched Benny’s dark, thunderous face and almost burst out laughing. When Kyson walked back over, she tilted her head and said lightly, “I’m beginning to think people are actually scared of you p>
He slid an arm around her waist and drew her closer. “And you? Are you scared of me too p>
“Of course I am.” She smiled and reached up to smooth his collar. “But you’re so gentle with me that it never lasts p>

The street was calm and nearly empty. Heat rushed to her face as she rested against his chest. “You should get going. Don’t you have meetings this afternoon p>
He didn’t reply. He just kept her in his arms a moment longer, letting the silence stretch.
When she finally stepped toward her car, she glanced at Benny, who was watching them from the curb. “Are you sure it’s fine for him to ride with you p>
“Don’t worry about it.” Kyson opened her door.
She drove off. He stood there for a beat, watching her car disappear. The softness in his eyes faded into something unreadable. Then he got into his own car.
