Kailey didn’t answer right away. Silence stretched between them. Without realizing it, she started picking at the edge of her nail.

Earlier that night, Kailey had walked through the neighborhood again. People told her Caleigh used to laugh often. They said her hair had turned gray almost overnight after the accident.
Kailey knew she could walk away — Zaria wasn’t wrong, and skilled silversmiths weren’t rare. If needed, they could always find someone else. But if she left now, Caleigh would be left to face everything alone.
“Do what you think is right,” Kyson said. “I’ll send Devin over to help you. No matter what happens, you won’t face it by yourself p>
Kailey laughed softly. “You’re not worried I’ll start relying on you too much p>
He let out a quiet chuckle. “Not everyone gets the chance to p>
She thought Kyson could be very romantic sometimes.
After they talked a little longer about nothing in particular, they ended the call. Kailey stood there for a while, staring into the distance. The sky still looked clear, but something about the horizon felt heavy, as if dark clouds were gathering quietly out of sight.
Early the next morning, Devin showed up outside Caleigh’s house with two bodyguards.

Kailey smiled back. “Thanks. You should get some rest. I’ll reach out if I need anything p>
He shook his head at once and motioned for the bodyguards to go rest while he stayed put. “I’m not here to relax. If something comes up and I’m not around, what’s the point of me being here p>
Seeing he meant it, Kailey didn’t argue further. They would need his help to look into the truth behind Caleigh’s husband’s death.
Just then, the door creaked open. Caleigh stepped out with a woven basket in hand. She didn’t look surprised to see Kailey. “Didn’t I tell you to leave? Do you not understand plain words p>
“Hey, that’s not—” Devin retorted, but Kailey shot him a look, and he stopped immediately. She walked forward instead. “Where are you headed, Mrs. Pierce? I’ll come with you p>
Caleigh didn’t respond, but she didn’t drive her away either.
They made their way toward the market. Along the path, a few neighbors greeted Caleigh in passing. “Let me carry that for you,” Kailey offered gently.
Caleigh looked over her shoulder, then handed her the basket without a word and bent down to sort through the vegetables. She chose leafy greens, selected a cut of meat, and added a few other ingredients, filling the basket bit by bit.
On the walk back, Caleigh didn’t say a word.
