Trying to justify his fondness for cake seemed pointless at this stage. But perhaps that was fine. There was something quietly sweet about the fact that Kailey had remembered.

Kailey gave him a gentle, knowing look, then slipped back inside and drew the door shut behind her.
Kyson lingered in the hallway, running his tongue along the roof of his mouth. Sweets had never held much appeal for him before. Somehow, that had changed.
Kailey had stayed up waiting for him, restless until she heard him come home, afraid he might overlook the cake entirely. Her plan had been simple—if he couldn’t finish it, he would have it for breakfast.

A quick glance passed between Zaria and Kailey, and they both agreed with a nod.
“You have makeup in your drawers, right? Make sure you freshen up before we go,” Dana said, lifting her chin as she walked out.
Watching Dana disappear down the hallway, Zaria exhaled slowly.

When the workday ended, Dana mentioned she needed to stop by home first and told Kailey and Zaria to head straight to the restaurant.
