With Kyson away on a business trip, Kailey’s schedule felt lighter. She made plans to meet Felicity for dinner the next evening, and afterward they walked through a nearby mall.
They talked as they moved from store to store, most of it turning into complaints about work and small gossip.
Felicity sighed deeply. “Sometimes I think I should just go back and take over my family’s business. Working like this every day isn’t living. I swear I’ve aged so much lately. Can’t you see it p>
Kailey burst out laughing at her dramatic tone. “Aren’t you afraid your dad will drag you back and arrange a marriage for you p>
“Not happening.” Felicity’s answer came fast. She had left home and settled in Aslesall just to stay out of her family’s reach. “My life belongs to me. They gave birth to me, but that doesn’t mean I’m an object they can trade. I won’t marry whoever they pick. That’s not up for discussion p>

They nudged each other and laughed.
When they walked past a men’s clothing store, Kailey paused. She had bought Kyson a tie before, yet she hadn’t given it to him. Too many things had happened, and it had slipped her mind.
Felicity noticed her distraction and crossed her arms. “You’re thinking about your husband again, aren’t you? Even a shop window reminds you of him. You never looked like this when it came to Ryan p>

“Exactly.” Felicity gave a small nod. “What you felt for Ryan wasn’t love. He just kept everyone else away from you, so he became the only one left p>
If he had accepted her confession back then, she probably would have given him everything without hesitation. People who schemed often ended up paying for it.
Kailey listened to Felicity’s wild guesses and only smiled. Maybe she was right. When something never reached an ending, it could be imagined in countless ways. Ryan had once felt like a nightmare that seemed impossible to escape, while Kyson had pulled her out of it.
After spending the day shopping, Kailey returned home with several bags in hand.
