Devin just shrugged. There were only two of them in the car. If she needed to vent, he could let her.
He glanced at the mounted phone on the dashboard. “Set the destination.” His tone came out casual — almost familiar.
Jessica let out a quiet huff and opened the navigation app on her phone. Her anger wasn’t truly aimed at him. Now that she’d cooled down a little, she knew she’d taken it out on the wrong person. Still, he had chosen to step in, and if he got involved, he couldn’t complain.
Devin noticed the shift in her mood. After a stretch of silence, he spoke more softly. “Mr. Blake isn’t doing well, you know. You really shouldn’t have talked to him like that.” There was no doubt Kyson would spend another sleepless night.
Jessica crossed her arms. “Why should that matter to me? I’m Kailey’s friend, not his. I care about what she’s going through. Everyone else’s pain has nothing to do with me p>
Devin looked at her again, clearly surprised, then smiled. “How long have you known her p>

Jessica picked up on his meaning. Her gaze dropped as she muttered, “I don’t have many friends. Kailey’s genuine, she’s kind, she’s fun, and she doesn’t look down on me. Of course I’d go all out for her p>

For a moment, Devin didn’t know how to respond. The way she said it — completely serious — made it impossible to argue. After a beat, he nodded. “That makes sense. Beautiful people should stick together. Ms. Evans really is rare. You picked well p>
“I know,” Jessica said with pride, then suddenly scowled. “Which is why your boss is even worse. Kailey is amazing, and he still hurt her. How does he live with himself? Isn’t he afraid karma will catch up to him p>
“Take that back,” Devin said, his expression turning firm. “I already told you — he has his reasons p>
“Then explain them,” Jessica retorted.
Devin wanted to, but the fallout from revealing the truth was something even Kyson couldn’t endure. He had no right to expose it.

Unable to clarify further, he said, “Things aren’t what you think. Mr. Blake and Candice aren’t involved. He wouldn’t be interested in her.” His tone was steady and sincere.
