Kailey gave him a knowing look but said nothing. She returned to her room to change.
It was difficult to tell whether Lyman himself was formidable or whether it was simply the people around him. If he wished, no detail seemed beyond his reach.
The weather was gloomy. During the midday rush, pedestrians and vehicles alike were trapped in their own slow-moving currents. Eventually, they arrived at the mall.
Inside, they spotted Irene with two other women. The trio chatted and laughed together with the ease of old familiarity.

Fresh from her treatments, she wore no makeup. Her skin glowed with the vitality of a woman in her thirties, fine lines appearing only when she smiled. She held Kailey’s hand tightly, as though afraid she might disappear.
Then she turned to her companions. “Come, let me introduce you. This is my daughter-in-law, Kailey. She designs jewelry — award-winning, internationally recognized. If you ever want something truly special, come to me. I’ll make sure she gives you a discount p>
