Kailey hurried down to the first floor, stopping only when she reached the hotel entrance. She braced herself against a flower bed, breathing hard as though she had just run a race. She couldn’t believe that after all this time, Ryan still thought she was the one to blame. He had come all the way to Aslesall just to force her to apologize to Olivia. In the end, years of family ties had meant nothing compared to the woman he loved.
A bitter smile twisted Kailey’s lips, and tears streamed down her cheeks, splattering onto the ground.

Kailey watched the way their steps matched perfectly as they walked side by side. “It’s nothing too dramatic,” she murmured. “I’ve just finally decided to cut ties with Uncle Ryan.” Separate journeys, separate futures. “I’ll do my best, make a good life for myself, and eventually repay him for everything he’s done. That way, I’ll clear the debt of gratitude.” Once that was settled, there would be nothing else tying them together.
It even surprised Kailey how much she found herself opening up that night. She was rarely one to voice her feelings, but as she strolled along with Kyson, hand in hand, the words just seemed to flow.
