Silence stretched while she held his gaze. A hollow laugh slipped out, and she shook her head. She turned away without another word and walked off.
Restraint locked him in place even as every part of him urged him to follow.
A violent storm churned in his lowered eyes, threatening to swallow him whole — and no one stood close enough to witness it.
A flash of movement stirred at the corner nearby. A shadow disappeared quickly.
Kailey returned to Mountain View Residence and learned that Lyman had arrived ahead of her. Low voices carried from the study, steady and restrained.
At the sound of them, heat rushed through her chest and settled there.
