As she looked away, a faint smile slipped across Kyson’s lips. A glimmer of amusement flickered in his eyes before it disappeared.
Kailey was still dressed in her hiking clothes, so she needed to head home to shower and change. Kyson pulled into the driveway, and the two of them went inside together.
In the garden, Irene lay stretched out on a lounge chair with a facial mask on, soaking up the last of the afternoon sun. Irene shot him a look. “Excuse me? I help too.” Setting the table and carrying dishes absolutely counted as helping in her mind. She glared at her son again, silently warning him to keep quiet.
Kailey always enjoyed watching the two of them argue. She pressed her lips together to hold back a smile. “We’re not eating at home tonight. We made plans with friends. I’ll go change, and then we’ll head out p>

The more she looked at Kailey, the more satisfied she felt. She waited until the young woman had gone inside before grabbing her son by the arm as he followed a few steps behind. “You’re going out for dinner. Does that mean there’ll be drinking? Don’t drink too much p>
Kyson looked completely at ease. He reached out and adjusted the mask that had shifted on Irene’s face, then flicked his fingers lightly as if dusting something off. “You should worry about yourself a little more. And don’t do what you did last night again. Can you promise me that p>
His tone sounded casual, but Irene caught the hint of displeasure beneath it.

Having said her piece, she drifted off as if nothing mattered, unconcerned about whether Kyson would argue back. The moment she turned the corner, she slipped into the sunroom.
She pressed a hand to her chest and exhaled deeply. Arguing with a son sharper with words than she was took real effort.
Yet when she thought of Kailey, a hint of sadness crossed her eyes, mixed with resignation. Some truths were better left buried. Kailey was better off never knowing.
Kyson remained in the living room and waited for nearly twenty minutes. When he heard light footsteps descending the stairs, he set his phone aside and looked up.
