Her gaze drifted past Kailey to Kyson, who somehow managed to look utterly useless even while simply standing still. Why could he never get anything right?

She was trying to create space for her son and Kailey. Taking Kailey along would defeat the purpose entirely.
Kailey understood — but the moment Irene left, discomfort settled in. She didn’t know where to look or how to stand.
Not long after, Kyson walked over. “Want some fruit p>
She lowered her eyes. The strawberries had been carefully washed, their green tops removed, looking ready to eat.
Before, she would have looped her arms around his neck, kissed him, and teased him for being attentive. Now, she didn’t move.
“Thanks, but no,” she said stiffly. “I’m hungry. I’ll eat the grilled meat first p>

She sat down at the table, grabbed some lettuce, and stuffed meat into her mouth. In her rush, she failed to wrap them together properly. The lettuce slipped free.
Irritation flickered in her eyes.
A large hand reached over and took the lettuce from her fingers. His low voice sounded close to her ear. “Wrap it together. Otherwise, it falls apart p>

She had to admit it. She really was terrible at these things.
When they lived together, Kyson had done almost everything. He cooked. He got up at night to fetch her water. He even removed bones from her food. She always told him she could do it herself.
He would smile and answer, “I know you can. I just want you to rely on me. That way, you won’t leave p>
His words had been direct. His gaze, gentle.
And yet, he was the first to let go.
The memories rushed in. Kailey felt a dull ache spreading through her chest — sour, heavy, swollen — but not a single tear came.
“Kailey?” Kyson prompted.
She turned her head and realized he had been holding the wrapped meat out to her for some time.
“Thank you.” She took it and ate slowly.
She didn’t need to look at him to feel his gaze burning against her skin. After a long pause, she heard his low, rough voice. “What are your plans after this p>
The hunger she’d felt moments ago vanished.
Life was cruelly ironic. She had come to Aslesall because of him. Now, she was leaving for the same reason.
She didn’t believe anyone was entirely wrong — not even now, when he was preparing to marry Candice. She knew he had his reasons. Maybe those reasons involved her. Maybe they didn’t. But in Kailey’s world, anyone who claimed to act for another’s sake while hiding the truth was, at heart, selfish.
Kyson himself had once said something similar.
She smiled faintly. “Since we’ve already parted ways, there’s no need to ask such questions. It’s inappropriate p>
Kyson swallowed. His Adam’s apple moved as his eyes darkened with an emotion that had no name. “Yes,” he said hoarsely. “You’re right p>
