Around the table, everyone traded uncertain looks. Even Shirley, who usually picked up on the smallest shift in mood, couldn’t quite piece together what was unfolding. Her plan had been simple—she had only wanted to give Ryan and Kailey another chance to clear the air, so she had told him yesterday that Kyson and Kailey were visiting. Now, however, the situation had grown far more complicated. Kyson was clearly no bystander.
From where he sat, Sawyer could already sense that this meal might turn into a confrontation. He let out a light laugh in an attempt to smooth things over. “You young people can settle your matters later. Let’s not let the food get cold. Ryan, have a seat.” Though his tone sounded casual, the last sentence carried the full weight of an older brother’s authority.

Between the two men, eye contact alone felt like a challenge being issued and accepted.
After a brief pause, Ryan let out a quiet scoff. He looked away first and moved to sit on Kailey’s other side.
