By the time Ryan finally made it back to his home, it was nearly ten o’clock. The house sat dark and silent, not a single light on anywhere.
He parked in the driveway and went inside. The moment he flicked on the entryway light, an uneasy feeling crept over him.
Kailey was always up late. So why was the house so still?
He moved through the living room, switching on lights as he went, and what greeted him left him speechless.
Ryan had bought this villa years ago. Its sleek black, white, and grey interior had always carried a cool, minimalist feel—until Kailey moved in and gradually filled it with warmth. Now it had reverted to exactly what it had been before.
The plush toys that once occupied the couch were gone, leaving only the bare, cold grey leather. The small decorations on the table had vanished. Even the green plants by the windows had disappeared. What remained was an unsettling, hollow emptiness.
Ryan stood frozen, eyes closed against the harsh overhead light that stretched his shadow long and thin across the floor.

His voice bounced off the walls and faded into silence.
He took the stairs two at a time. Kailey’s bedroom door was slightly ajar, and when he pushed it open, darkness swallowed everything. He hit the light switch. The closet doors hung wide open—empty, her clothes gone as if they had never been there.
“Kailey! Stop hiding. This isn’t funny!” he shouted, desperation edging into his voice.
He moved through every room in the house, but there was no trace of her anywhere. It was as though she had dissolved without a sound, leaving nothing behind.
Panic set in. His hands trembled as he reached for his phone.
He drew a shaky breath, steadied himself, and called her.
No answer.
He called again.
Still nothing.
On the third attempt, the call wouldn’t connect at all. Kailey had blocked his number.
Ryan’s jaw clenched as a wave of anger surged through him, and then just as quickly gave way to a heavy, hollowing helplessness. He sank onto the couch, eyes fixed on the ceiling as time stretched endlessly around him.
Kailey, by contrast, had slept soundly.
She had seen Ryan’s calls the night before and chosen to let them go unanswered. She had already said everything that needed saying, and dragging things out would only lead to another argument. Space was better for both of them.
When she stepped out of her room the next morning, she found Kyson already waiting with her favorite breakfast set out on the table.
